Some points on the Directory/XML issue:   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
DSML is a key enabler for the next stage of flexible and robust directory applications.
DSML is being established as an open standard, so that developers and vendors will be able to adopt it into their systems.
DSML for directories, as an alternative to LDAP, enables a new level of application flexibility and allows mature XML tools and practices to add to the value of directory components.

 Directory Services Markup Language Server
DSML is a subset of the XML language, which is specifically used to describe operations and data on the LDAP server.
The DSML format requests are parsed and a JNDI request for the same is created, which is sent on the LDAP server and the LDAP responses for the same are obtained.
DSML is the markup language that provides the missing piece that allows these two to work together and provides a common ground for all XML-based applications to make better use of directories.

Cover Pages: Directory Services Markup Language (DSML)
The intent of DSML is to allow XML-based enterprise applications to leverage profile and resource information from a directory in their native environment; it allows XML and directories to work together and provides a common ground for all XML-based applications to make better use of directories.
DSML 1.0, which is the result of a promise made in July to create a draft standard by the end of the year, is now in the hands of the Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards (OASIS), an international standardization group focused on data-exchange formats.
While DSML does not purport to solve the issue of multimaster replication, which has pitted Microsoft against other vendors, it does provide a common means of letting vendors map the schemas of their directories in a common format.

 Directory Services Markup Language (DSML)
The intent of DSML is to allow XML-based enterprise applications to leverage profile and resource information from a directory in their native environment.
DSML is intended to be a simple XML schema definition that will enable directories to publish basic profile information in the form of an XML document so that it can be easily shared via native Internet protocols (such as HTTP or SMTP), as well as used by other applications.
It is not an initial goal of DSML to specify the attributes that all directories must contain, or the method with which the directory information is accessed from the directory.

DSML Syntax   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Also, DSML enables applications that do not use LDAP to communicate with LDAP-based applications, easily operating on data generated by an Oracle Internet Directory client tool or accessing the directory through a firewall.
DSML is based on XML,which is optimized for delivery over the Web.
Such constraints are described in a directory schema, which may be included in the same DSML document or may be in a separate document.

DSML gives you the power to access your LDAP information as XML - Java World
DSML, in conjunction with technologies like XSL and EJB, provides a unique way to solve many business problems, such as supply chain management and customer support.
The technology was developed out of work done by Bowstreet and completed by the DSML Working Group; the latter submitted the technology to the W3C and OASIS standards groups in December 1999.

Fawcette.com - Access Directories Through Firewalls With DSML   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Bowstreet originated DSML as an XML dialect for describing the structure and contents of directories conforming to the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol version 3 (LDAPv3) standard (see Resources).
The six organizations—then known as DSML.org—turned over the DSML 1.0 specification draft to OASIS in December 1999, where it languished in technical committee (TC) obscurity.
The fundamental problem with DSML 1.0 was its lack of ability to perform directory query and update operations.

DSML (Directory Services Markup Language) is an application of the Extensible Markup Language (XML) that enables different computer network directory formats to be expressed in a common format and shared by different directory systems.
DSML has been heralded in industry press as a key component to the future of e-commerce and Web-based applications that link businesses and business processes together.
DSML is part of a handful of other efforts currently underway to adopt standards that make it easier for the contents of different directories to be shared across platforms and over the Internet.

DSML is an extension of Extensible Markup Language (XML) that lets applications make generic calls to directory data, letting the applications interoperate with a large number of directory services, including Novell Directory Services (NDS) and Microsoft’s Active Directory (AD).
DSML is the brainchild of start-up (Bowstreet with the cooperation of the directory world heavyweights: Novell, Microsoft, the Sun-Netscape Alliance, Oracle, and IBM.
Bowstreet is working on a DSML standard and submitted a first version of the specifications to the Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards (OASIS) on December 7.

 DSML Actions
DSML (Directory Services Markup Language) is an XML grammar for presenting LDAP queries and storing responses to queries.
In order for this action to create a meaningful DSML request, it needs to know the Base DN of the Add request (representing the target node of the directory tree) as well as the Object Class of the new entity being added.
To set up a valid Execute DSML action, you have to tell Composer where the DSML request document (which should be an in-memory DOM) can be found, and where to map the DSML response that comes back after a request is made.

CNN - Novell and Microsoft agree on XML-based standard - July 14, 1999
DSML was created by e-commerce vendor Bowstreet as a way for its Web-based application framework to interact with a directory.
Although the DSML is only a baseline requirement for directory enabling Web applications, the fact that rivals Microsoft and Novell are among those committed to it is significant.
The vendors are expected to submit DSML to a standards body or bodies in the coming weeks, although they did not specify which ones.

One of the most challanging tasks an information services group faces is to specify the objects and their attributes so that uniform infrastructures in a heterogeneous environment can be created.
We feel that the current DSML language does not allow one to define all the constructs that are necessary to define, maintain, and extend schemas between a large heterogeneous group of people defining and maintaining a distributed information service.

DSML is a way to represent directory services information in XML.
DSML will accelerate the industry shift toward a new computing approach in which XML-enabled applications leverage business functionality and services, managed in directories and delivered via the Internet.
“Support for DSML continues our objective of ensuring that our clients are able to take advantage of the latest e-commerce standards to maintain their competitive position,” said Lem Lasher, who heads CSC’s European Consulting organization.

DSML 1.0 - now being reviewed by the Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards, the World Wide Web Consortium and the BizTalk initiative - is being pushed by Bowstreet Software, IBM, Microsoft, Novell, Oracle and the Sun-Netscape Alliance.
DSML reconciles the differences by providing a third language both directories speak, XML.
Querying isn't currently defined in DSML 1.0, but the DSML working group (DSML.org) is already working on a query markup for DSML 2.0.

Sun ONE Directory Server 5.2 Deployment Guide: Appendix A Accessing Data Using DSMLv2 Over HTTP/SOAP
Before issuing DSML requests over HTTP/SOAP you need to ensure that the DSML front end is enabled by sending an empty DSML batch request to your directory.
To issue a DSML request you can choose, as with the LDAP protocol, either to bind to the directory as a given user or access anonymously.
It is interesting to note that as DSML requests are managed on a batch basis, if you decide to issue requests by LDAP proxy, then the required DSML proxy authorization request must be the first in a given batch of requests.
