Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A DSM cautionary statement is required to create balance and perspective for the various diagnoses and criteria used in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) published by the American Psychiatric Association.
The classificatory structure of early editions of the DSM was rooted in a distinction between two poles of mental disorder, psychosis and neurosis.
The criteria that are described in the DSM are meant to be used by clinicians and investigators.

 American Psychiatric Association
Since the primary purpose of the early versions of the DSM was to standardize data collection administratively and to facilitate communication among clinicians, the diagnostic makeup of these early versions represented a consensus of those disorders that were being seen by psychiatrists in the United States in the 1950's and 1960's.
Another important aspect of the DSM diagnostic system is that the diagnoses are described strictly in terms of patterns of symptoms that tend to cluster together; the symptoms can be observed by the clinician or reported by the patient or family members.
DSM stands for "Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders" and is published by the American Psychiatric Association, the professional membership organization representing United States psychiatrists.

 DSM IV-TR -pdd
DSM IV-TR Pervasive Developmental Disorders are characterized by severe and pervasive impairment in several areas of developmental: reciprocal social interaction skills, communication skills, or the presence of stereotyped behavior, interests, and activities.
The qualitative impairments that define these conditions are distinctly deviant relative to the individual's developmental level or mental age.
Although terms like "psychosis" and "childhood schizophrenia" were once used to refer to individuals with these conditions, there is considerable evidence to suggest that the Pervasive Developmental Disorders are distinct from Schizophrenia (however, an individual with Pervasive Developmental Disorder may occasionally later develop Schizophrenia).

 What is DSM-IV-TR?
With no completely new DSM in the offering until 2006 or later, in 2000 the American Psychiatric Association revised the text of DSM-IV to include new research information that had been developed since first publication in 1994.
This text revision (TR) included a very few changes in the criteria, designed mainly to correct what were perceived as errors in the original text.
Several of the Paraphilias (exhibitionism, frotteurism, pedophilia, sexual sadism, and voyeurism) can now be diagnosed if they are acted upon, even though they may not cause the person whose behavior is in question distress or impaired functioning as a result.

 DSM V-Codes
The DSM consists of three major components: the diagnostic classification, the diagnostic criteria sets, and the descriptive text.
The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) is the standard classification of mental disorders used by mental health professionals in the United States.
Numerous changes were made to the classification (i.e., disorders were added, deleted, and reorganized), to the diagnostic criteria sets, and to the descriptive text based on a careful consideration of the available research about the various mental disorders.

Counselling, Psychotherapy & Mental Health Bibliography -- Part One
This relatively minor text revision of the 1994 DSM-IV is the current 'bible' of psychiatry, used to classify mental disorders in the US.
The DSM provides a diagnostic classification based on diagnostic criteria indicating which symptoms (or subset of possible symptoms) must be present and for how long, together with a descriptive text for each diagnostic category.
The section on psychiatric disorders won't replace the DSM, but for a quick check of facts, it is often handier.

Some mental health trade groups currently consider women in our community to be mentally ill. It was not long ago that they also considered homosexuality a mental illness, and it took many years for academics and political activists to debunk all the bogus "science" and get this changed.
