Topic: DVBST

DVBST | Topic Definition | Find the Meaning and Define the Answer of DVBST
DVBST was an acronym used by Tektronix to describe their line of "Direct-View Bistable Storage Tubes".
These were cathode ray tubes (CRTs) that stored information written to them using an analog technique inherent in the CRT and based upon the secondary emission of electrons.
DVBSTs were used for analog oscilloscopes (such as the 603 monitor, the 611 monitor, and the 7623 plug-in mainframe oscilloscope) and for computer terminals such as the architypal Tek 4010 (the "mean green flashin' machine") and its several successors including the Tektronix 4014.

DVBST technology was anticipated by Andrew Haeff of the (United States) Naval Research Laboratory, and by Williams and Kilburn in the late 1940s.
DVBSTs were used for analog oscilloscopes (first in the 564 oscilloscope, then the 601 monitor, the 611 monitor, the 7613 plug-in mainframe oscilloscope, all from Tektronix) and for computer terminals such as the archetypal Tek 4010 (the "mean green flashin' machine") and its several successors including the Tektronix 4014.
Another version of a DVBST was the "dark trace" CRT which was produced by Thomas Electronics and others in the early 1970s.

Tek's Bob Anderson reduced to practice the science and technology in the late 1950s to yield a reliable and simple DVST.
Portions of the screen are individually written-to by a conventional electron beam gun, and "flooded" by a wide, low velocity electron gun.

The modern approach of having a local memory in the display that stores a value for each pixel would have been prohibitively expensive in the 1970s.
Tektronix solved this problem by developing the Direct View Bistable Storage Tube (DVBST) CRT, which allowed the use of a slower, serial, data connection combined with a vector graphics generator that only needed to write the vectors (the graphic data) to the CRT once.
Having had data written, the CRT itself remembered the data.

Later developments by Tektronix included the development of multiple-trace oscilloscopes for comparing signals either by time-multiplexing (via chopping or trace alternation) or by the presence of multiple electron guns in the tube.
In 1973, Tektronix introduced the Direct View Bistable STorage Tube (DVBST), which allowed observing single pulse waveforms rather than (as previously) only repeating wave forms.
By the late 1970s, with transistor components rather than vacuum tubes, Tektronix was selling oscilloscopes on which the signal trace traveled across the screen faster than the speed of light.
