		Companies around the world have been running an estimated 40 trials to test the potential of DVB-H (Digital Video Broadband-Handheld) technology, which bypasses mobile phone networks and broadcasts directly to handsets from TV masts.
		But companies argue that although video-streaming over high-speed, third-generation (3G) networks is ideal for on-demand, niche TV services, there is a poor business case for unlimited users and usage.
		DVBH allows an unlimited number of handsets to receive broadcast television, which could make it effective for mass market, flat-rate TV services that might cost customers around 5-10 euros per month, British-based mobile group O2 has said.

		After Tim and H3G, also Europa TV is joining the Mediaset project for the launch of the new DVBH technology that will make it possible for Italy to launch, in the second half of 2006, the first mobile commercial television service in Europe.
		Mediaset and Europa TV, a company controlled by Holland Italia, which is owned by Tarak Ben Ammar (71%) and the French broadcaster TF1 (29%), have reached an agreement that foresees, pending necessary authorisations, the sale to Mediaset of the infrastructure and frequencies that will be wholly destined to the new DVBH network.
		The agreement also foresees that, after the necessary authorisations, Europa TV will hold a minority stake in the company that will be controlled by Mediaset, which will manage the new digital transmission network.

	Nokia tunes up to the market
		DVBH will be included in devices that Nokia will launch in the second quarter of 2006.
		It will be in the N92, which is a dedicated mobile TV device and will have an inbuilt DVBH transceiver.
		Actually there are some countries that tried it in 2005, but we hope that the football World Cup in Germany this year will be very good showcase for DVBH.

		Despite the limitations, Nokia is convinced there is a market for Mobile TV and that the company's technology, digital video broadcast handheld (DVBH), will give the viewer choice and flexibility.
		TeliaSonera development manager Pekka Pesari told CNN the companies behind the trial were still unclear about how much customers would be willing to pay for the service, one of the things that needs to be finalized before mobile TV becomes a commercial reality.
		With at least four other technologies to rival Nokia's DVBH, it's not guaranteed that the Helsinki experiment will pay off for the consortium members.

		DVBT or DVBH receivers have a tougher job to do (adding video to the multiplex) and current production versions, which are designed for use in set top boxes typically draw 2 to 3 watts from a power supply.
		In principle though, DVBT or DVBH should both be able to offer a more power efficient receiver implementation per bit processed than HSDPA.
