DVD-R - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A DVD-Recordable or DVD-R (pronounced "DVD Are" or "DVD Dash Are") is an optical disc with a larger storage capacity than a CD-R, typically 4.7 GB (4.38 GiB) instead of 700 MiB, although the capacity of the original standard was 3.95 GB.
A DVD advertised as 4.7 GB may seem to hold less than that because manufacturers quote the capacity of a writable DVD disc using decimal prefixes rather than the binary prefixes used by some software.
Compared to a CD's 1.2 mm of polycarbonate, a DVD's laser beam only has to penetrate 0.6 mm of plastic in order to reach the dye recording layer, which allows the lens to focus the beam to a smaller spot size, which is key for writing smaller pits.

When DVD technology first appeared in households, users were simply popping DVD discs into their DVD players to watch movies — an attractive option to the then-conventional VCR.
DVD-R is a recordable DVD format similar to CD-R and DVD+R. DVD-R can record data only once and then the data becomes permanent on the disc.
But the immediate future lies in more powerful DVD burners that work with discs that can hold 4.7GB of data, and may be used for performing back-ups and storing movies that may be viewed through consumer DVD movie players.

DVD-RAM backers promote rival format The Register
Q2 2006 isn't that far away, and with the shift toward media away from drives, DVD-RAM supporters looking to grow the popularity of their favoured format will need to do more to highlight it than they appear to be doing today.
Yet none of the RAMPRG member companies we spoke to last week said they highlight DVD-RAM as the preferred format in consumer DVD recorders that incorporate DVD-RAM support - in the manner, say, of washing machine vendors and washing powders.
The Recordable DVD Council (RDVDC), which oversees the standard, is quick to list the format's advantages: its speed, true random accessibility, integrated defect management, its applicability to both PC and CE roles, and improved long-play video recording quality.

Current DVD drives use red lasers (630 to 650 nm), and the "easiest" way to increase areal density is to switch to shorter-wavelength lasers, i.e.
Another issue is manufacturing tolerances for 120 mm DVD disks, which are already very high.
For example, for a given infrared laser with a wavelength of 850 nm, this technology will double the laser light frequency (using a so-called distributed Bragg reflector or DBR), and produce blue light at 425 nm.
