TV-FM DX - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The term DX is an old telegraph term meaning "long distance." These terms refer to the active search for distant radio or television stations received during unusual tropospheric lower atmospheric weather-related, or E-layer and F2-layer upper atmospheric ionospheric conditions.
The development of interest in TV-FM DX as a hobby can arise after more distant signals are either intentionally or accidentally discovered, leading to a serious interest in improving the aerial and receiving installation for the purpose of actively seeking long-range television and radio reception.
The TV-FM DX hobby is somewhat similar in scope to other radio/electronic related hobbies such as amateur radio, Medium Wave DX, or short-wave radio, and organisations such as the Worldwide TV-FM DX Association have developed to co-ordinate and foster the further study and enjoyment of VHF/UHF television and FM broadcast DX.

DX in the 1930s: Static in the attic
Late at night, with my ears within a few inches of the speaker of a huge Warner superheterodyne console receiver, I was happily oblivious to the deafening cracks of static electricity crashing through the speaker, to the great discomfort of my long-suffering and over-tolerant parents.
My hobby was DXing (DX was the abbreviation for distance), which consisted of listening and then writing to radio stations operating on the broadcast band, quoting details of their programs, and asking them for written confirmation.

 DXers' Lab -- on hard-core-dx.com
It is possible to DX on the MW band 24hrs a day (provided you don't need to sleep!) but the band has two distinctly different "personalities" according to the time of day.
Many DX stations fall somewhere between these two extremes; for example you may hear only part of a callsign perhaps in a poorly understood language, or maybe in the midst of heavy interference or jamming.
For virtually all other forms of DX listening (such as short-wave or VHF) a specialised receiver will be needed, but fortunately for the MW enthusiast it is possible to get started with even the most basic of domestic receivers since they all tune the frequencies of interest i.e.
