DXF revision 12   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
A DXF file is composed of many groups, each of which occupies two lines in the DXF file.
The appearance of values in the DXF file is not affected by the setting of the UNITS command: coordinates are always represented as decimal (or possibly scientific notation if very large) numbers, and angles are always represented in decimal degrees with zero degrees to the east of origin.
Accommodating DXF files from future releases of AutoCAD will be easier if you write your DXF processing program in a table-driven way, ignoring any groups not presently defined, and making no assumptions about the order of groups in an entity.

AutoCAD DXF - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
AutoCAD DXF (Drawing Interchange Format, or Drawing Exchange Format) is a CAD data file format, developed by Autodesk as their solution for enabling data interoperability between AutoCAD and other programs.
DXF was originally introduced in December 1982 as part of AutoCAD 1.0, and was intended to provide an exact representation of the data in the AutoCAD native file format, DWG (Drawing), for which Autodesk did (and does) not publish specifications.

DXF files can be either ASCII or binary formats.
Essentially a DXF file is composed of pairs of codes and associated values.
Using these group code and value pairs, a DXF file is organized into sections, which are composed of records, which in turn are composed of a group code and a data item.

AutoCAD DXF: Summary from the Encyclopedia of Graphics File Formats   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Although DXF was developed to represent the data used in a CAD program, it is used by many programs as a "least common denominator" format for the exchange of many different types of data, most commonly vector-oriented information but also text and 3D polygons.
DXF also allows a perplexing number of ways of doing nearly the same thing, such as describing objects as separate editable groups.
One curious aspect of DXF is that it does not contain a color palette, yet most objects in a DXF file can be assigned a distinct color value with group code 62.

 AutoCAD Release 12 DXF Format
In the case of error loading a DXF file using DXFIN, AutoCAD reports the error with a message indicating the nature of the error and the last line processed in the DXF file before the error was detected.
Unlike ASCII DXF files, which entail a trade-off between size and floating-point accuracy, binary DXF files preserve all of the accuracy in the drawing database.
Extended entity data group codes are represented in Binary DXF as a single byte with the value 255, followed by a 2-byte integer value containing the actual group code, followed by the actual value.
