Dextromethorphan - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
DXM occurs as white crystals, is sparingly soluble in water, and freely soluble in alcohol.
DXM is rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, and exerts its activity within 15 to 60 minutes of ingestion.
DXM is metabolized by various liver enzymes and subsequently undergoes O-demethylation, N-demethylation, and partial conjugation with glucuronic acid and sulfate ions.

DXM - Encyclopedia.WorldSearch   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-19)
DXM, however, is unusual in that its effects are nonlinear with respect to dose, and are grouped into "plateaus", of which there are typically regarded to be four.
However using DXM at recreational doses bears risks such as brain damage and psychotic breaks which have not occurred with many drugs (and are probably impossible with marijuana, ecstasy, and sane doses of LSD, among others).
DXM HBr and the freebase have very high vaporization points, and if the user extracted the chemical from commercial cough preparations, some of the inactives may have survived the extraction to yield a very harsh, possibly toxic smoke.

Dextroverse : The DXM FAQ - Side Effects
DXM does, of course, protect the brain from hypoxic damage, so hypoxia with DXM is probably safer than an equivalent degree of hypoxia with opiates, but there's still no need to put your brain at risk.
DXM induces a release of serotonin, and while it has never been demonstrated to cause serotonin syndrome by itself, it has been shown to do so in combination with other serotonergics (365).
DXM probably isn't quite as friendly as I used to think it was, and there's no need to place onesself in harm's way for the sake of a buzz.

 Dextromethorphan (DXM) | CESAR
Dextromethorphan (DXM) is a synthetic substance most commonly found in a variety of over-the-counter (OTC) medicines as an antitussive (cough suppressant) and expectorant (an agent that promotes the removal of mucus from the respiratory tract).
Other medical uses of DXM include the temporary relief of sinus congestion, runny nose, cough, sneezing, itching of the nose and throat, and watery eyes caused by hay fever, allergies, cold, or flu (influenza).
Within a short time those same manufactures began to produce forms of DXM with "some appealing flavoring," which led at least one researcher to suggest that the cycle of recreational abuse may be repeated.

 Dextromethorphan
DXM is a cough-suppressing ingredient in a variety of over-the-counter cold and cough medications.
DXM acts centrally to elevate the threshold for coughing.
Not only is too much DXM dangerous, but cold medicines contain combinations of other drugs, including acetaminophen (an analgesic pain reliever), guaifenesin (an expectorant), ephedrine or pseudoephedrine (stimulant-like properties), and chlorpheniramine maleate (an antihistamine with anticholinergic and sedative side effects).

 Dextroverse - The DXM FAQ
DXM has been shown to increase the frequency of complex partial seizures, and it's possible that it is the seizures, and not the DXM itself, which is causing problems.
Another thing to keep in mind is that DXM in the upper plateaus is a considerably different experience than the lower plateaus, and may be better suited to spiritual or ritual use.
DXM can be a great tool for spiritual rebirth, but it can also turn you into a paranoid, antisocial asshole.

Dextromethorphan (Street Names: DXM, DM, CCC, Triple C, Candy, Robo, Velvet, Rojo)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-19)
DXM, as well as its metabolite, methorphan, have been shown to be antagonists at the N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptor which is linked to other amino acid neurotransmitters, glutamate and glycine.
Because of its antagonist activity at the NMDA receptors in the brain, ongoing research is investigating the usefulness of DXM as a neuroprotective drug in the treatment of strokes, and in the treatment of severe bacterial meningitis in children.
The behaviorally-active metabolite of DXM, dextrorphan, is related to a family of drugs containing PCP and ketamine and may contribute to its abuse potential.

 About DXM
Abuse of DXM became apparent as early as 1973, the over the counter cough medicines using DXM began making their medicines’ taste unpleasant as a way to discourage abuse.
DXM is a hallucinogen most closely associated with ketamine and PCP.
Unlike any other hallucinogen, DXM has different levels of effects, known as “plateaus” with different effects that range from the “drunk” and “stoned” feeling of the first plateau to complete body/mind disillusion and hallucination of the fourth plateau.

 Partnership for Awareness - DXM
Interesting Facts: DXM replaced codeine and other opiates in over the counter cough suppressants in the 60’s due to the number of people who were abusing the medications.
Trying to obtain a DXM high through over the counter medications is extremely dangerous because of other ingredients in the cough syrups such as Acetaminophen, which can cause liver damage, heart attack, strokes, or even death.
There are home methods of extracting DXM from pills and then placing the powder in gel caps, however, there have been documented deaths resulting from people abusing Coricidin, either by taking the extracted DXM, or over dosing on Coricidin pills.

 Drug Info
DXM is definitely not a dance drug, and getting scammed with a DXM tablet when you are expecting ecstasy is no fun at all.
The pharmacological activity of DXM that increases heatstroke potential is less cut and dry, and is likely related to its effects on serotonin.
Also, while DXM tablets are more likely to induce medical emergencies in dance environments when they are being passed off as "ecstasy" to unsuspecting consumers, serious adverse reactions are rare among purposeful DXM users who consume the drug in home environments.

DXM is also sometimes abused with other drugs or alcohol, which can increase the dangerous physical effects.

 Intelligence Bulletin: DXM (Dextromethorphan)
DXM is a synthetically produced substance that is chemically related to codeine, though it is not an opiate.
DXM is an ingredient in more than 140 over-the-counter cough and cold remedies and since the 1950s has gradually replaced codeine as the most widely used cough suppressant in the United States.
Abusers ingest various amounts of DXM depending on their body weight and the effect or plateau that they are attempting to achieve (see text box).

DXM is in a class of drugs known as dissociative anaesthetics.
DXM is closer to ketamine in effects, but is still is significantly different than that.
DXM at hypermedical doses is known for being psychotomimetic (causing psychosis-like symptoms), so definitely it should NOT be taken if you suffer from any psychotic mental illness, such as schizophrenia.

Dextromethorphan (DXM), a substance used as a cough suppressant since the early sixties, is being increasingly misused in Switzerland, mainly by adolescents.
The severity of DXM poisoning is dose-dependent but still varies considerably.
Uncontrolled use of DXM is strongly to be discouraged, as severe poisoning can occur and isolated fatal cases have been reported in the literature.

 Addiction Medicine - DXM
DXM is a synthetically produced substance, the methylated dextrorotary analogue of levorphanol, a substance related to codeine.
Other problems with DXM use is that many of the OTC preparations are not pure DXM and may contain acetaminophen, antihistamines or stimulants that can cause a severe side effect if taken in excess.
Also, DXM can be found in the form of a bromide salt which can lead to bromide poisoning if large quantities are taken.

 DXM | "Robo": Fast Facts
Because even though DXM is legal and will mess you up, it's got a long way to go before it's ever a main selection (or even a featured alternate) in the Drug of the Month Club.
In the brain, DXM triggers its psychoactive/dissociative effects at the same receptors targeted by PCP and ketamine, by blocking reuptake of the neurotransmitter dopamine.
Making DXM especially risky is that many over-the-counter medications which contain the drug also contain other active ingredients, including acetaminophen, which can raise the risk of overdose complications, even death.

FDA Warns Against Abuse of Dextromethorphan (DXM)
Although DXM, when formulated properly and used in small amounts, can be safely used in cough suppressant medicines, abuse of the drug can cause death as well as other serious adverse events such as brain damage, seizure, loss of consciousness, and irregular heart beat.
DXM abuse, though not a new phenomenon, has developed into a disturbing new trend which involves the sale of pure DXM in powdered form.
DXM has gradually replaced codeine as the most widely used cough suppressant in the United States.

Coricidin: Dangerous recreational DXM (dextromethorphan) source, and can cause death!   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-19)
Coricidin appears to be materially more dangerous as a source of DXM than OTC medicines that contain only dextromethorphan, such as Robitussin Maximum Strength cough syrup, or Dexalone, which is a gelcap containing only DXM sold in the US; regrettably nowhere as easy to find as Coricidin.
While taking DXM as a psychedelic at recreational doses is by NO MEANS safe (death has occurred from just using pure dextromethorphan recreationally), sources such as Robitussin Maximum Strength cough syrup and Dexalone are FAR less likely to result in hospitalization or death than Coricidin.
It is maintained by The DXM Harm Reduction Project, which is solely responsible for its contents.
