In military parlance, D-Day (the "D" stands for "decision") is a term often used to denote the day on which a combat attack or operation is to be initiated.
The terms D-day and H-hour are used for the day and hour on which a combat attack or operation is to be initiated.
They designate the day and hour of the operation when the day and hour have not yet been determined, or where secrecy is essential.

Today is the 60th Anniversary of the D Day landings, an event in World War 2 which was a massive defeat for Germany; though events like the Fall of Stalingrad saw the Russians contribute or sacrifice a lot.
For every man leaving for D Day, there was a woman who would have likely willingly sacrificed her own life if it were possible to save him.
The number of women who saw service as nurses at D Day is forgotten by most - but in wars there are always an army of nurses there to patch up the wounds men cause to each other.

I hope in some way, by publishing this account here for the first time shortly before the 60th Anniversary of the D Day Landings, we may at last give thanks and appreciation for the contribution made by the crew of Halifax LL123 and all the other unsung heroes of RAF Coastal Command.
We were issued with our flight charts, recognition signals and identification codes for the day whereupon we returned to the Sergeant’s mess for the usual pre-flight aircrew meal after which we picked up our butty boxes and flasks of steaming hot coffee and having kitted up, we were off.
During ’44 we flew every single day of the year except two when heavy snows prevented take-off, even though both aircrew and ground staff attempted to clear the runways.

The most unusual aspect was having the chance to interact with locals who had been there at the time of the D Day landings.
American Heritage magazine sponsored a World War II Commemorative Tour on the D-Day landings in Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge in the fall of 2000 conducted by Historic Tours/Tour Center (http://www.ww2tours.com/) These are my notes from my participation in this trip in Normandy which was quite special.
Our tour directors have many contacts, and we were fêted in several places by the French honoring our veterans.
