S-branes - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
S-branes are space-like branes, hypothetical objects (or configurations) in string theory that are localized in the temporal direction, but otherwise analogous to P-branes.
"S" stands for "Strominger", "Sen", or "Spacelike", depending on the context.

M-theory - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The importance of D-branes stems from the fact that they make it possible to study the excitations of the brane using the renormalizable 2D quantum field theory of the open string instead of the non-renormalizable world-volume theory of the D-brane itself.
These objects are called p-branes where p denotes their dimensionality (thus, 1-brane for a string and 2-brane for a membrane).
In this way it becomes possible to compute non-perturbative phenomena using perturbative methods.

String theory - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Nothing in Maxwell 's theory of electromagnetism or Einstein 's theory of relativity makes this kind of prediction; these theories require physicists to insert the number of dimensions "by hand".
Classical intuition suggests that it might shrink to a single point, but this would violate Heisenberg 's uncertainty principle.
The characteristic size of the string loop will be a balance between the tension force, acting to make it small, and the uncertainty effect, which keeps it "stretched".

 P-branes
P-branes or branes are terms from quantum superstring theory used to refer to membrane-like structures of one to eleven dimensions that arise in equations of this heavily mathematical theory.
They were originally based on the implications of one-dimensional strings.

 Brane
Branes are objects in M-theory and its offshoot, brane cosmology.
In M-theory, p-branes (the name is derived from membrane) are objects of spatial dimensionality p (for example, a string is a 1-brane).
In brane cosmology, the term "brane" is used to refer to objects similar to our four-dimensional universe which move in a higher-dimensional "bulk".

How p-Brane Acquires Mass??? - Information Technology Services
Branes are like the Table, they are Dimensionally 'opened-out' energy, energy that is dimensionally reduced, less than 3-D, so Branes are infact consisted of Electro-Magnetic Energy, this dimensionally aspect gives Matter a Field in which to sit.
Branes are therefore the nothing more than constructs of an incorrect model extension, created infact by the Mathematical Genius's who neglect to take Geometric facts of life into considerations.
Branes are not made form a higher Dimensional energy, if they were then Galaxies would not be Confined into structure's of Volume/Area's.

What are branes and LQG? - Information Technology Services
The word brane comes from "membrane", and the idea is "Like that but in several dimensions" Originally branes and strings were more or less on an equal footing, and branes were where strings stuck their end points (if I may be so over colorful).
I still don't understand branes all that well but I now know what LQG is. A little more explination is needed on the whole branes thing.
The same way in normal Euclidean geometry you can have lines, planes and solids, you can have branes of any dimension sliced from 11D space as a whole.

It means that how we look at the brane world is how we look at the string, and in knowing that any ground state is is its zeropoint, we have identified the particle in its expression, as well as the movement of the cosmos as well.
You see how the brane having been reached, has now been conceptaulize as a viable model on two levels, on the quantum one, as well as the cosmological one.

In addition, by examining ``boosted'' S-branes, we find what appears to be a surprising dual S-brane description of strings and D-branes, which also indicates that the critical electric field can be considered as a self-dual point in string theory.

We understand "String and Brane Cosmology" to deal with the general questions and issues raised by the attempt to understand string/M-theory (and its low-energy limits) in such settings.
The only condition we feel it would be useful to require is that there will be sufficient expertise among the members of the group to make this group more than a Journal Club and to facilitate joint projects and future collaborations.
The title/subject of this working group, like that of the other groups, is thus quite general, and we do not wish to a priori exclude any particular sub-topic.

 Supergravity S-Branes
In this way all SD p -brane solutions are obtained, as well as the NS and M-theory space branes.
We construct supergravity solutions corresponding to space-like branes in string theory.
Our approach is to apply the usual solution generating techniques to an appropriate time-dependent solution of the eleven dimensional vacuum Einstein equations.

But M-theory's branes, surfaces and parallel universes ensure that the world of fundamental physics is a truly strange place; with or without the strings.
These "branes" could exist in three or more dimensions and, with enough energy, could grow to huge sizes - even as large as the whole universe.
String theory is the name given to the arcane and fiendishly complicated mathematical world that was first dreamed up in the late 1960s as a way to describe the strong nuclear interaction, the force that stops protons flying apart in the nucleus of atoms.

B \\ We study both the direct and the double dimensional reduction of space-like branes of M-theory and point out some peculiarities in the process unlike their time-like counterpart.
In the former case we need to use delocalized SM-brane solutions, whereas in the latter case we need to use anisotropic SM-brane solutions in the directions which are compactified.
In particular, we show how starting from SM2 and SM5-brane solutions we can obtain SD2 and SNS5-brane as well as SNS1 and SD4-brane solutions of string theory by direct and double dimensional reductions respectively.

Only if the membranes change the *topology* of spacetime can this conclusion be avoided---but it is well known that such topology changes also lead to very unpleasant phenomena such as closed timelike worldlines..
A Space-like brane or S-brane is even weirder: it is completely transverse to the time direction, so it only exists for an instant.
Another way of approaching this is to think of de Sitter space as a BRANE [short for membrane] in a higher-dimensional spacetime.

On bouncing brane worlds, S -branes and branonium cosmology
The bounces we consider normally would be expected to require an energy density which violates the weak energy condition, and for our codimension-one examples this is attributable to bulk curvature terms in the effective Friedmann equation.

I began with aspects of the black hole information problem, moved to entropy computations when D-brane physics arrived, developed aspects of holographic gravity/gauge dualities useful to black holes and black branes, and most recently concentrated on the search for string theoretic mechanisms for resolution of spacetime singularities.

One of the points our group put forth to the Government's Minister of Education is that there exists a considerable NZ diaspora (by some estimates, 800,000 expat Kiwis, as compared to 4,000,000 Kiwis in NZ), and that NZ would benefit from reconnecting these expatriates in suitable ways.

We prove that non-coisotropic branes in the Poisson-Sigma model are allowed at the quantum level.
When the brane is defined by second-class constraints, the perturbative quantization of the model yields the Kontsevich's star product associated to the Dirac bracket on the brane.
These topological brane theories are proposed as microscopic description of topological M/F-theories.

Résumé : Spacelike branes introduced by Gutperle and Strominger in 2002 and partially motivated by the dS/CFT correspondence are extended objects whose tangential dimensions are all spacelike.
We apply such ideas to the constraints of the superembedding formalism which allows the calculation of string-theoretic and M-theoretic derivative corrections to brane dynamics.
Cohomological techniques can be used to construct deformations of the constraints in a manner which preserves maximal supersymmetry.

 IngentaConnect Lectures on string/brane cosmology
Recent developments are emphasized, especially the attempts to derive inflation or alternatives to inflation from the dynamics of branes in string theory.
Time-dependent backgrounds with potential cosmological implications, such as those provided by negative tension branes and S-branes and the rolling string tachyon are also discussed.
An overview of some cosmological aspects of string theory is presented.
