Daara J: National Geographic World Music   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Daara J also consciously tapped into tasso—a rhythmic Senegalese oral poetry tradition that comments on daily life and current events—and positioned it as an African precursor to rap.
Daara J was followed a year later by Xalima, which took the group into more overtly political territory—to the point that Daara J was even hired to edit speeches and promote anti-corruption political campaigns during Senegal's 2000 presidential election.
The album was a quantum leap forward for Daara J, combining all of their previous strengths—powerful raps in Wolof and French, bouncy reggae melodies, sly Latin vamps—with elements of jazz, funk, and even the occasional flamenco guitar flourish.

 Daara J
Daara J means ‘school of life’ and for the three young men from Senegal (N’Dango D, Aladji Man and Faada Freddy) that make up this African/Ragga Hip-Hop group, consciousness and exposing the truths of the world are the most important aspects of their musical message.
Although Daara J is very proud to ‘look up’ to all the hip-hop pioneers and stalwarts from America, the group addresses their lost brothers and sisters in America and the Black Diaspora who have been detached from their true African culture for the past 400 years.
