Daboecia is a small genus in the family Ericaceae, containing two shrubby species, closely related to the genus Erica.
Daboecia differs from European Erica species in having a deciduous corolla which is substantially larger than the corolla in the same species of Erica.

Botanically, the word 'heather' refers to the genus Calluna, but it is also used as a general term for the closely related heaths, which are principally made up of two other genera, Erica and Daboecia.
My bed is designed so that the bloom seasons of the heathers overlap; the continuous color ensures that our front bed is always eye-appealing.
Daboecia x scotia 'Tabramhill' is one of my favorite season-spanners; it has dark crimson flowers and dark green foliage, a dwarf habit, and blooms from May through December.
