Dacrycarpus imbricatus from the Bolovens Plateau, Lao PDR (Laos)
As in most of the family, the seed is inverse and Dacrycarpus resembles Podocarpus, of which it has long been treated as a section, because of the union of the fertile scale with the seed and its distinct receptacle.
In addition to the fusion of the fertile bract with the corresponding scale and seed, however, is the fact that the cone is produced terminally on leafy branches and not on specialized shoots or peduncles.

Dacrycarpus eocenica is re-examined and it is concluded that this species is not Dacrycarpus, but probably belongs to an extinct podocarpaceous genus.
It is hypothesised that during the Tertiary in south-eastern Australia stomatal distribution was reduced on Dacrycarpus and Acmopyle foliage.
In Dacrycarpus the bilaterally flattened foliage type (which has a greater photosynthetic area than the bifacially flattened foliage) became rare or extinct after the Early Oligocene, prior to the extinction of the genus in the region.

Abstract The pollen morphology of the New Zealand species of Dacrydium, Podocarpus, and Dacrycarpus is described from observations made with the light microscope and scanning and transmission electron microscopes.
Dacrycarpus dacrydioides pollen is easily identified because it is the only modern trisaccate type in New Zealand.
This region is adjacent to the proximal roots of the sacci at the lateral margins of the cappaand may function during periods of water stress, facilitating collapse and invagination of the sacci to protect the furrow.

Stands of Dacrycarpus bordering swamps are wetter and include dense colonies of Astelia gramlis, Blechnum capense and, near the coast, Freycinetia banksii and Gahnia xanthocarpa.
The extent of mature Dacrycarpus forest seems disproportionately large in relation either to the frequency of young trees within the mature stands or to the extent of seral forest containing young Dacrycarpus.
Dacrycarpus forms a highly distinctive forest, meriting effective conservation, but the best existing reserves are in areas threatened by changing river courses.

BP, tall podocarp forest of Dacrycarpus, Prumnopitys and Podocarpus species is recorded to have spread over most of the region in response to an ameliorating climate.
This podocarp forest persisted in the region until the mid Holocene, when Nothofagus menziesii and Dacrydium cupressinum spread to dominate upland and lowland forests in response to increasing cool conditions and precipitation (McGlone 1988).
Lowland Southland forests are dominated by mixed Nothofagus, podocarp, and broad-leaved hardwood forest (Holloway 1954) of Nothofagus menziesii, Dacrydium cupressinum, Prumnopitys ferruginea, P.
