Pickford, although in her late '20s when the film was shot, is absolutely believable as a pigtailed 12-year-old; she's the epitome of a child-woman, the essence of gamine.
Daddy Long Legs is a wonderful example of Mary Pickford's talent for portraying adolescent girls even when she herself was much older.
She was 26 when the film was made in 1919, but she is convincing even when she plays a 12-year-old orphan and is quite captivating when she grows up to go to college.

The film is a fascinating story of a child so protected by her wealthy parents that she has no idea of what is going on in the world.
Films like Tess of the Storm Country (1922), Sparrows (1926), and My Best Girl (1927) maintained her popularity, but by the end of the decade Mary’s screen persona was starting to look dated in the wake of the flapper culture (Whitfield 63).
She made one unsuccessful film with Fairbanks—their adaptation of The Taming of the Shrew in 1929—and then she attempted only three more sound films before realizing that she could not readily bridge the gap between her earlier characters and the sophistication of the film roles and audience expectations of 1930’s (Encarta).

"Daddy Long Legs" is one of the purest delights of silent cinema, and yet another testament to the genius of Mary Pickford -- obscured for so long by the general unavailability of her films, but in process of revelation in detail through the ongoing releases of the Pickford Foundation.
I watched the film with some wistfulness, since it was the last of the current Pickford releases I hadn't seen, and also with some trepidation, since it would be my first encounter with the music of Maria Newman, whose silent film scores are the subject of much controversy among silent film fans.
The music she wrote for this film consequently took me by surprise, because it was one of the loveliest silent film scores I've ever heard.

Happy ending There are two basic problems with this plot, in all (except one) of its various film versions: the girl is attracted to a man who's old enough to be her father, and he IS her father in a surrogate sense.
Even worse, Daddy Long-Legs first becomes attracted to the girl when she's a minor: perhaps his interest in her is genuinely paternal, but it definitely acquires a sexual tone by the time she reaches the brink of adulthood.
This film is faithful to the original novel, but it deflects the Lolita issue by splitting the stepdaughter into two characters: the little-girl orphan played by Shirley Temple, and her (adult) older sister played by Rochelle Hudson.

THE IRANIAN: Features, Laleh Khalili, Iranian women
The film version of "Daddy Long Legs" with Fred Astaire and Leslie Caron was not at all as I had remembered it - nor did it bear any resemblance to the book by Jean Webster.
The film awoke in me memories of all the films characters we had seen in my Iranian childhood and all the books and news we had read in which women figured prominently.
We were shocked by the honesty of her desires and -secretly, very secretly- longed to one day experience them: the flight of the clocks, the melting of the moon, the darkness in which two sated shadows light two cigarettes.

Injecting some social commentary into his comic melodrama, director Marshall "Mickey" Neilan (who also appears in the drama) shows life's cruel circumstances by contrasting Judy's motherless plight with that of the spoiled, snobbish Angelina Wyckoff (Fay Lemport) whose mother is one of the members of the board of trustees which visits the orphanage every Wednesday.
Pickford shows a remarkable range in Daddy-Long-Legs (1919), opening the film as a believable 12-year-old (though the actress was 26 at the time) and finishing it as a successful adult novelist, who is just as believable.
Judy's orphan is just one in a long line of Pickford heroines renowned for their spunky, perpetually chin-up optimism despite all odds.
