Daewoo Kalos | Roadtests | The Australian
In this case, Australians are being encouraged to forget all about both the Daewoo Lanos and the troubled times that saw market share and consumer confidence here and abroad tumble in 2001, as the bankrupt South Korean car-builder waited for General Motors to soul-search and, later, rescue it.
Now a Holden-owned operation, and now with the Kalos hatch and sedan, GM Daewoo Australia has started rebuilding – that is, attempting to treble – its position in the tough budget-car market toward pre-millennium Lanos (and before it, Cielo) levels of around 1000 sales a month.
Much less modernisation has occurred in the mechanical stakes, with Daewoo using a revised version of the old GM-derived 1.5-litre SOHC engine dating back to Cielo and which still needs more pulling power at low revs and more refinement and response when revs are higher.

Autozine - Evenement: Daewoo Kalos Challenge
The week began with a send-off at Luton, Daewoo's UK HQ, followed by a stopover at Breda in Holland, where the pair were given donations for SOS Children's Villages and met top engineer Yves Fourdin, who prepared the car for its epic journey.
The statistics of the Daewoo Challenge, in which two British adventurers are driving the 16,000km (10,000 miles) from the UK to South Korea to raise money for SOS Childrens Villages, are beginning to make fascinating reading.
The Daewoo Kalos has already travelled 10,000km (6,200 miles) of the extended 20,000km trip, surviving fast driving on pot-holed and unmade roads in Eastern Europe and desert temperatures in the high 40s Centigrade.

Daewoo Kalos April 2003 Car Review - CarPoint Australia
The Kalos compact is the first new car from Daewoo under new owner General Motors, and, if it's a sign of things to come, then the future looks very good indeed.
When queried about this, Daewoo reckons that this can be fitted by dealers as an aftermarket option, while something like the passenger airbag, which the company says is necessary for it to improve upon the Lanos' poor NCAP record, can't.
There is no doubt that the Kalos is a massive improvement over the Lanos, and if it is a sign of things to come, then the reborn Daewoo may prove to be a good investment for GM.

 cars - GM Daewoo
GM Daewoo Auto and Technology (GM Daewoo or GMDAT) was first established as National Motor in 1937 in Bupyeong-ku, Incheon, South Korea.
In the 1990s, Daewoo expanded its presence under its own brand, notably in Europe, where it sold the Opel Ascona-based Espero and Kadett-based Nexia (also Racer and Cielo in the domestic market; the latter is often spelled as Ciero for the lack of 'L' sound in Korean).
In Canada and India, the Daewoo Lacetti is sold as the Chevrolet Optra (hatchback being Optra5), and in China, it is the Buick Excelle (the hatchback being the Excelle HRV).

Korean car manufacturer GM Daewoo is confident it can put its recent financial troubles behind it and regain a worthy share of the Australian market, but admits any recovery won't happen overnight.
Standard equipment, however, is where GM Daewoo looks set to give the competition some headaches, with every Kalos picking up twin front airbags, air-conditioning, power windows, power steering, CD player and much more for the $14,990 ask.
It predicts Kalos will account for 6000 of its projected 13,000 total sales this year, with more to come as the brand's reputation recovers.

 CARkeys - Daewoo Kalos Blue
The Kalos Blue is, as the name suggests, based on the recently introduced Kalos (and, to stretch the obvious point still further, is available only in blue).
In standard form the Kalos is already an attractive little car, but it looks better still in this form, with a more purposeful front end, a rear spoiler, a chrome tailpipe, smart 15" alloy wheels with 195/50 tyres, and a ride height that is 25mm lower than that of the original car.
In a straight line, therefore, the Blue isn't exactly a ball of fire, and in fact the extra weight of the various styling items means it is heavier than a normal 1.4 Kalos, which dulls the performance very slightly.

Holden says the Barina is an improved version of the Kalos, sold here until last December, but when we put a Barina and a Kalos side by side we were hard pressed to spot any major changes either inside or out, apart from badges and a few trim items.
