Elis, or Eleia is an ancient district within the modern prefecture of Ilia.
The local form of the name was Valis, or Valeia, and its meaning, in all probability, “the lowland.” In its physical constitution Elis is practically one with Achaea and Arcadia; its mountains are mere offshoots of the Arcadian highlands, and its principal rivers are fed by Arcadian springs.
Hollow Elis, the largest and most northern of the three, was watered by the Peneus and its tributary the Ladon.

There are not enough superlatives in my vocabulary to express what I believe to be the value of "For The Sake Of Wales: The Memoirs of Gwynfor Evans," especially to North American Welsh, or others of the Greater Welsh Nation throughout the world, who want to come home to their Welshness.
Dafydd Wigley, who was mentored by and succeeded Gwynfor Evans as president of Plaid Cymru, not only had the highest winning percentage of any candidate for the Welsh Assembly, but very nearly became the leader of the Assembly because of the vote for Plaid Cymru.
Many American Welsh are totally unaware that young Welsh men and women, including such well known Welsh patriots as singer Dafydd Iwan, and historian John Davies, and hundreds of unknown young Welsh patriots, endured imprisonment for demanding the right to speak Welsh in their own country, including in the Courts.

Elfyn Llwyd called the creation of the Welsh Assembly "a welcome development", but is known to be concerned at the over-concentration of interest and effort within the party with events in Cardiff at the expense of fighting Plaid's corner at Westminster.

Dafydd Elis Thomas has revealed himself to be a classic petty-bourgeois politician, who became rapidly disillusioned with waging a principled fight to win the South Wales working class and now yearns to prove his respectability and law-abiding nature to none other than the British imperialist state.

Having said all this caution is needed before drawing any catastrophic conclusions about the demise of Plaid: it is likely to remain a force and hold its three seats because to many it remains the only defender of their interests as Welsh speakers.
