Dag Hjalmar Agne Carl Hammarskjold was Secretary-General of the United Nations from 10 April 1953 until 18 September 1961 when he met his death in a plane accident while on a peace mission in the Congo.
Hammarskjold was unanimously appointed Secretary-General of the United Nations by the General Assembly on 7 April 1953 on the recommendation of the Security Council.
Hammarskjold was responsible for the organization in 1955 and 1958 of the first and second UN international conference on the peaceful uses of atomic energy in Geneva, and for planning a UN conference on the application of science and technology for the benefit of the less developed areas of the world held in 1962.

Dag Hammarskjold, the youngest son of Swedish prime minister and Hague tribunal member Hjalmar Hammarskjold and the grandson of Social Gospel clergy, quickly developed a reputation as one of the leading students of his generation, completing four degrees (humanities, history, law, and economics) at Uppsala University by the time he was thirty.
Among Hammarskjold's major accomplishments were his successful negotiations leading to the 1955 release of American soldiers captured by the Chinese during the Korean War and the mobilization of the first United Nations Emergency Force during the Suez Crisis of 1956.
By 1960, however, Hammarskjold was preoccupied with the emerging nations of Asia and Africa, particularly the newly-independent Congo where the government faced a military mutiny, secession of one of its provinces, and Belgian troop intervention.

Information has now come to light that Mr Hammarskjold was murdered as a result of CIA (US Central Intelligence Agency) and MI5 (British Secret Service) involvement in the placement of a bomb on Mr Hammarskjold's aircraft on 18 September, 1961 in Northern Rhodesia, as it was then known.
The alleged plot to assassinate United Nations secretary general Dag Hammarskjöld 37 years ago was the brainchild of at least two British security agencies — MI5 and the Special Operations Executive — and the CIA, top-secret documents show.
As can be seen by reading his biography Dag Hammarskjold was a hands on Secretary General of the United Nations and was not a puppet of either Britain, the US or Russia.
