Daggerboard - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A daggerboard is a type of centreboard used by various sailing craft.
The shape of the daggerboard converts the forward motion into a windward lift, countering the leeward push of the sail.
Daggerboards are usually found in small craft such as day sailers, where their size is easily handled by a single person.

Rigging Small Sailboats - Chapter 10   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
A daggerboard or centerboard is a thin vertical plate sticking out the bottom of the boat that gives the boat a "grip" on the water thereby preventing or at least minimizing leeward movement.
While daggerboards and centerboards are not strictly a part of the rigging in terms of its "transmission" function, they do help greatly in converting the power of the wind in the sails to forward motion.
One drawback of daggerboards is that should the boat sail into shallow waters or accidentally come up onto a beach, the daggerboard will not pivot back and up into the trunk as will a centerboard.

 Articles - Daggerboards
Daggerboard catamarans have several advantages over their keel counterparts, some of which are well known and others that are more subtle and sometimes only recognized by people who have used them.
Usually catamaran daggerboards have a higher aspect ratio and are deeper than the equivalent length monohull, since they have the ability to retract them and therefore have no draft considerations.
Daggerboards, their surrounding structures and systems are more expensive to build, so builders prefer to stay away from them given the choice.

Twin Rotating Foils on Multihulls/No Daggerboard - Boat Design Forums
Banana boards are daggerboards that are curved so as to form a vertical lifting surface towards the bottom of the foil-not necessarily relevant to twin foils; they're used to partialy lift the boat.
You could steer with either the rudders or the daggerboards, but he mosly envisioned being able to gybe set a positive angle of attack on the daggerboards, there were tillers and a cross arm with a comb.
The daggerboards and rudders dropped through cylindrical cassettes, the only difference being that the cassettes were smaller than the 100% chord of the foil.

RANT - leading edge of daggerboard trunk - The Laser Sailboat Forum   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
What I'm ranting about is how the daggerboard and trunk wear each other down due to the forward pull of the shockcord and the raising and lowering of the board.
The problem with the daggerboard popping up an inch at every tack is now aggrevated even more than before with the high-standing camcleat fairleads on the new deck cleat base.
The wear on the leading edge of the daggerboard and of its well causes the foil to rotate (trim forward) and does affect performance.

Daggerboard sloop? - Boat Design Forums
I have the opportunity to buy a 38 feet racing sloop, with a daggerboard (sliding up and down, not a pivoting centerboard) from which the deck has been repaced (!!!) from a flush deck to a cruiser/racer one.
The daggerboard only weights 400 pounds but goes down 11', so there is no real weight down at the bottom.
In a survival situation, with the daggerboard up, the boat will slide on the side (having very litlle "grip" in the water) so it's unlikely that the wind or sea will roll it over.

Because it is so technically difficult and labor intensive, only the most expensive daggerboards will be perfectly straight, most will have minor waves or a slight hook to one side, on the order of 2-5mm.
In such cases, you may be better off with a less expensive blade as long as you pick a fair and straight daggerboard.

 Re: Daggerboard Holder
My FJ has 2 cross-wise thwarts, near the forward and aft end of the centerboard trunk (look for "Sliver", the wooden FJ with sail 4271 in photos from 2004 Eastern Regionals on the website, and maybe you can see it).
The advantage of thwarts, is that the aft thwart makes a great seat for the crew in light air (sitting on a daggerboard trunk is uncomfortable, and it is harder to keep out of the way of mainsheet and vang when tacking).
I believe that the old Vanguard I-FJs had a thwart at the aft end, and that in the front had some kind of combination thwart/knees/mast partner [??].
