Topic: Dagorlad

Battle of Dagorlad - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Later, in the Third Age, the Dagorlad was the site of many battles between Gondor and various Easterling armies.
As a result of the Battle of Dagorlad that was staged there, the Dead Marshes became what they were when Frodo crossed them in the Third Age.
Note: In Peter Jackson's movie adaptation of The Lord of the Rings, Dagorlad is misspelled as "Dagorland" on various maps shown in the films and in the appendices of the special extended DVD editions.

Dagorlad's was a particularly difficult album to listen to over and over.
The band attempts a cross between Cradle Of Filth and Rhapsody and, you guessed it, that trip is fraught with horns, K&F (keyboards & female vocals), accented intros and the tired tales of evil princes and scary dragons.
One such band is Dagorlad whose inclusion here is pushing the boundaries of metal - although not in the way the band would have thought or hoped.

But where they are superior to Dagorlad is the simple element of songwriting and structure.
The good news is during the one or two spoken passages (again, had me thinking of Dagorlad's ill-chosen visage), he remains in character with a suitably evil voice that doesn't break the mood of the album.
This may be due to the somewhat "busy" nature of the synth arrangements or the oft-meandering riffs that twist and lurch with a kind of disordered chaotic precision.

Dagorlad have all this in large amounts, and they do at times, convey a very Bal-Sagoth (circa A Black Moon Broods Over Lemuria) feel of blood-drenched war hymns.
Dagorlad are capable of penning some pretty good moments of axe-swinging metal, but insist on ruining it with these constant interruptions.
The aforementioned "A Black Moon?" is good point of reference for a majority of the non-interlude material, alternating between lumbering death metal passages and speedier fl metal.

Belgian DAGORLAD ship similar waters as the Austrian duo, but are more deeply rooted in Black Metal than SUMMONING nowadays.
They also combine medieval atmosphere and melodies with (Black) Metal, and DAGORLAD manage to build their very own atmosphere as you will not meet too often.
Just as SUMMONING DAGORLAD use a drum-computer, which on the one hand fits the kind of music, but on the other hand does not seem to be as well integrated as with the Austrians, it rather seems like a foreign object at times.

In the end I got neither, as Dagorlad manage to elude excessive proximity to any given band's sound.
This last observation can be partially explained by the artificial drumming common to both records, but also extends to other occasional similarities.
Ultimately, Dagorlad have created a very decent, reasonably varied and not excessively conventional album, and show sufficient talent to create some atmosphere and keep the listener interested most of the time -- although there are some exceptions to that rule, as things sometimes do get a bit repetitive.
