The Dahlak archipelago is an island group located in the Red Sea off Massawa, Eritrea.
According to Edward Ullendorff, the Dahlak islanders were amongst the first in East Africa to convert to Islam, and a number of tombstones in Kufic writing attest to this early connection.
In the late 19th century, the islands became part of the Italian protectorate of Eritrea, which was formed in 1885, and afterwards was part of the history of that territory through its independence in 1993.

It was the chief port for pearl fishing in the southern part of the Red Sea and was formally used as a military base by the Ethiopians.
The two cranes of the former floating dock rise above sea level in the northern channel between Nokra and Dahlak Kebir, while the rest of the wreck is populated by riff fish, a variety of corals and blue and fl speckled manta rays.
Note that when the purpose of the visit the Dahlak Islands is deep diving, the visitor should be aware of the 2400 meter difference in altitude between Massawa and Asmara.

One of the more interesting locations in Eritrea is the Dahlak Archipelago, otherwise known as the spider islands.
At the end of the Eritean war of independence with ethiopia, I believe the Eritreans actually captured a russian made submarine out there.
