With their past, you might expect something similar to Shadows Fall or Killswitch Engage, however The Black Dahlia Murder is more similar to an early Swedish death metal band then any current US metalcore band.
While there is no song that is purely melodic death, black or death metal there are a few songs that really highlight each style the best.
Their debut release combine clear elements of hardcore, black metal and even touches of grind into an album that is undeniably melodic death metal yet just seems different.

These two bands are my faves right now pretty much, they are bot incredible and very underrated, especially Darkest Hour, who often is dismissed as just another metalcore act.

And it is credited with being a soundtrack of sorts to a "neo-40's film noir soundtrack, featuring Burlesque, Saloon, and Dark Swing Toons." There is included in the CD liner, an entire history of the character of Jimmy Vargas and the history he had with the Black Dahlia of murder mystery fame.
The worst song on this CD, I would have to say, is "Trashcan Jukebox," which musically is a decent little mid-tempo swing tune, but the lyrics are so silly that the listener is distracted from the beat.
But when you put those same talented minstrels to the task of trying to make a bad song like "High Heels, Black Stockings" good, it just falls flat, and comes off as a cheesy attempt to be something it's not.

As the band began playing the slow, blues-y intro to "Unrepentant," one of their most popular songs, the crowd began to move and swirl in anticipation of the upcoming fast chorus of the song.
The rest of the band, acting as though Dahlia's jump into the drums surprised them just as much as the crowd, quickly threw down their instruments and stormed off stage.
From this point on, the Dwarves held the audience in rapture, quickly moving from one song to another in Ramones-like fashion.

The Black Dahlia Murder: Miasma - PopMatters Music Review
Miasma is without a doubt one of the most intense American metal crossover albums of the year, but after repeated listens, it becomes clear that despite the huge amount of talent, The Black Dahlia Murder lack the kind of flair that all their heroes possessed.
Considering how metalcore bands tend to use vocalists who rely on the same old hardcore barking, The Black Dahlia Murder add a refreshing twist to the proceedings, and the fact that both vocal styles are provided by one person, in the form of the insanely versatile Trevor Strnad, makes it all the more impressive.
Two and a half minutes in, the band deftly shifts from pure speed to a highly effective midtempo breakdown, but a minute later, the song comes to an abrupt halt, leaving listeners catching their breath as the opening narration on "Novelty Crosses" begins.

By 1993 the duo had launched Mephisto Records with their first song, "Dream of the Black Dahlia." Both the track and label were pivotal in defining the nascent San Francisco house sound -- psychedelic, jazzy, and breakbeat-leaning.
Mephisto Odyssey's two original members, Johnston and Zurich-born Orpheos DeJournette, were happy to comply since they had initially bonded at age 15 over guitars and Van Halen.
While Mephisto Odyssey isn't thinking of its deal as a pact with the devil, the group is proceeding very carefully.

 June 2000
Mephisto Odyssey were asked to re-mix "So What!" Not only was this the first, officially sanctioned re-mix of a Jane's Addiction song, this was Mephisto's "big break." Following the astounding success of "Jane's Addiction vs Mephisto Odyssey," their creative talent and potential was apparent to the Warner Brothers crew and contracts were promptly signed.
Johnston and Dejournette set up their first studio and their first effort as Mephisto Odyssey, "Dream of the Black Dahlia," was released.
Mephisto Odyssey was reborn as a trio with renewed enthusiasm and dedication to writing new material.

UW Press - : Mrs. Dumpty, Chana Bloch
Chana Bloch has published two books of poems, The Secrets of the Tribe and The Past Keeps Changing, as well as translations of the biblical Song of Songs and work by the Israeli poets Dahlia Ravikovitch and Yehuda Amichai.
What interests Chana Bloch is the inner life: how we are formed by our losses and our parents' losses, how we learn what we need to know through our intuitions and confusions, how we deny and delay and finally discover who we are.
For even while Bloch offers us a chronicle of pain, she demonstrates that 'the end of safety' is the beginning of revelation and transformation, as 'Lightning flares at the windows / zinc-white' in a 'wind that can drive / a nail through a tree trunk.'"—Sandra Gilbert

 Splendid E-zine reviews: The Dwarves
The problem is, scumbag extraordinaire Blag Dahlia blesses each song with some vulgarian diatribes, smarmy slander about lesbians and other typical Dwarves reference points, steering these songs (and the whole album for that matter) away from any hope of reaching Hitsville, USA.
If you enjoy the Dwarves' asshole personality approach to everything from songwriting to the band's notoriously short sets, you'll probably be let down this time around, but you can't do the same schtick forever -- can you?
If you've followed the Dwarves over the years, this album is noticeably lacking the unbridled rage and reckless abandon that blasted from their previous releases.

Plug In music : Review of Dwarves - The Dwarves Must Die
Led by singer Blag Dahlia, the Dwarves resume their routine, perhaps with a bit less steam, by creating catchy, quick songs — that is, if you can get past the lyrics (and the album cover).
The song’s lyrics are as much of a cheesy intro to the album (“Rock, pop, we got hardcore, we got way more”) are as they are smug welcoming to the Dwarves newest album.
As arrogant as ever, the band that once called themselves “the band that wouldn’t die” has, apparently, changed their minds.

Eschbach claims the title track is the song most representative of the band's sound, but that each tune has "its own distinct personality." The guitars and drums are the focal points of Miasma, and they shred and blast like a battlefield.
Once we break down The Black Dahlia Murder's past for you, we think you'll agree with our assertion that after the release of their debut Unhallowed, the deck appeared stacked against this Michigan death-metal band.
Those are the types of events that most bands can't rebound from, especially when the band is so young and inexperienced.
