 Dahshur
Dahshur, first opened to the public in October 1996, is about 10 km south of Saqqara, although in reality the northernmost monuments of the Dahshur area are no more than 2 km south of Saqqara.
Dahshur contains several pyramid complexes, the most prominent of which are the two pyramids of the first 4th-Dynasty pharaoh, Sneferu (2613 - 2589 BCE).
Sneferu's construction of two pyramids at Dahshur (as well as completing his father's pyramid at Medium) would have necessitated an amount of materials and labor outstripping even the efforts involved in the construction of the Great Pyramid.

The absence of any human remains in the tomb, as well as the cleanliness of the interior of the sarcophagus, suggests that Senwosret III was not buried in his tomb at Dahshur; instead, the king may have been interred in Abydos, where the king built another mortuary complex.

 EgyptSites - Amenemhet III
About 2km to the east of Snefru's Bent Pyramid at Dahshur is one of a series of three Middle Kingdom pyramids, a dark ruined structure rising from the sand and looking more like a rocky outcrop than the remains of a pyramid.
It was during an inspection of the Dahshur site by the Egyptian Antiquities Organisation in 1900 that a beautiful dark basalt pyramidion was found on the eastern side of the structure, decorated with hieroglyphic inscriptions on each side (now in Cairo Museum).
Amenemhet III seems to have virtually completed then abandoned his Dahshur pyramid at around year 15 of his reign, when he began a new monument at Hawara in which he was buried.

As you can see, much of the outer limestone covering is still intact, and yet this pyramid is older than the Black Pyramid, the Red Pyramid, or any of the pyramids at Giza, all of which have lost most of their outer layers to the ravages of time and pilfering by later generations of builders.

 Bent Pyramid
The Bent Pyramid at Dahshur is very significant historically.
Earlier attempts at building these massive structures had revolved around step pyramids, like Zoser's step pyramid at Saqqara, about 10 kilometers north of Dahshur, but the Bent Pyramid is the Egyptians' first attempt to build what we now think of as a "typical" pyramid.
Like most Egyptian pyramids, the Bent Pyramid has an entrance on its north face, but if you look closely at this photo of the west side, you'll see a fl square half-way up and to the right of center, which is another entrance.

Rediscover Ancient Egypt - The Egyptian Pyramids at Giza, Sakkara, Dahshur, and Meidum
If the two main pyramids at Dahshur are to be attributed to Snefru, and possibly a third pyramid at Meidum, it means that Snefru, in the course of his reign of 24 years, was responsible for the quarrying, transport, and dressing of several times the quantity of the Great Pyramid.
In the Giza and Dahshur pyramids, which provide no evidence of any kind of burials at all, almost every pyramid, according to this crazy theory, underwent one or several of these peculiar changes of mind.
How is this logical, in the face of the fact that the Giza and Dahshur pyramids are more superior than the pyramids that followed in every respect of size, workmanship, and elaboration.
