Daikatana is not an unmitigated disaster - but unfortunately, that's not enough to endorse it.
Ironically, Daikatana's biggest failures are due in large part to both a lack of imagination and poor design choices - in short, the very principles on which Ion Storm was founded.
Daikatana's opening scene is five minutes of dense, tedious exposition delivered as a virtual monologue by a character who stands still while the camera makes swooping motions around him.

Daikatana was marketed and hyped up a lot before it's release; when it finally did get released (after a few setbacks) it didn't receive the praise and merit expected.
Given that Daikatana uses the engine for the cutscenes, more attention to the models would have been appreciated - the fact that characters don't move their mouths when they talk is a little disconcerting.
Daikatana definitely has some cool weapons, each one having idiosyncrasies that you have to be aware of.

Daikatana is living proof of the gaming adage that a game is only late till it's released, but it's bad forever.
When it comes to Daikatana being overrated, though, it proves just how powerful John's reputation was that right up until the day the game was released, both press and gamers were still taking a "wait and see" attitude with it.
Advertising for Daikatana was bought out years before the game, which is what drove the hype up to ridiculous levels.

Having the game set around this sword, you'd think that the modelers would take some care to make the Daikatana at least remotely cool, but, alas, the result is utterly disappointing (although I'm told that, as you gain experience levels and upgrade your Daikatana, its appearance changes -- more on that later).
This terribly restrictive and cramped feel is repeated throughout the demo, though to a slightly lesser extent in the second and third level.

Daikatana wasn't a disaster because of the game (although it was at best sub-standard, and I wouln't ever let someone I know play it), it was a disaster because the game took so long to make, and took so much money to make that it caused Eidos major financial trouble.

Although it seemed odd to some that the creator of such depthless sensations as the Doom series would be interested in pushing the boundaries of the genre, it made sense to me. Daikatana was meant to introduce ambitious new ideas, and indeed, the final product embodies the richness of content once missing from 3D shooters.
Despite its infusion of new elements, Daikatana is an old-fashioned first-person shooter that sends the trio reeling on a campaign through four time periods: far-future Japan, ancient Greece, Norway in 560 A.D. and San Francisco in the not-too-distant 2030.
Each time period introduces new weapons, enemies, power-ups and graphical themes, but the vintage formula of coupling relentless battles with quests to locate the next access card or switch is a familiar one.
