The Daily Mirror was launched on 2 November 1903 by Alfred Harmsworth (later Lord Northcliffe) as a newspaper for women, run by women.
The Mirror was the first UK paper to adopt the appearance of the New York tabloids and was noted for its consistent campaign in opposing the appeasement of Adolf Hitler.
The Daily Mirror then stated that it was the subject of a "calculated and malicious hoax" [1].

Daily Mirror editor Piers Morgan has been sacked after the newspaper conceded photos of British soldiers abusing an Iraqi were fake.
In a statement the Mirror said it had fallen victim to a "calculated and malicious hoax" and that it would be "inappropriate" for Morgan to continue.

 Daily Mirror apologizes for fake photos - Salon
LONDON (AP) -- The Daily Mirror newspaper published a front-page apology Saturday after photographs purportedly showing British forces abusing Iraqi prisoners turned out to be fake.
"The evidence against them is not strong enough to convict in a court but that is not the burden of proof the Daily Mirror demands of itself," it said.
The published apology followed a similar statement from the newspaper's owner, Trinity Mirror PLC., on Friday, which also announced the resignation of editor Piers Morgan.
