TUCSON - The publisher and editor of the Arizona Daily Star announced Monday that he is stepping down after only four months on the job and taking a leave of absence from the paper's parent company.
Stoeffler, 46, was named editor and publisher of the Star in June, shortly after Lee, based in Davenport, Iowa, acquired the newspaper in its $1.46 billion purchase of Pulitzer Inc.
He began working for Lee in 1979 as a part-time reporter at the La Crosse, Wis., Tribune before working for 14 years at the Wisconsin State Journal in Madison, where he was city editor.

CAIRO: For more than seven years, Abu-Ayoub Al-Masry, the purported successor to Abu Musab Al-Zarqawi, has been held in an Egyptian prison, an Islamist lawyer Mamdouh Ismail told The Daily Star Egypt.
After the death of Al-Zarqawi in Iraq, the U.S. military claimed that Al-Masry had succeeded the militant Islamist and had been appointed leader of the Al-Qaeda faction in Iraq.
In response to the incident, the U.S. army center in Iraq was quoted by Al-Masry Al-Youm daily newspaper as saying that they cannot comment on the news that Al-Masry is in an Egyptian prison.
