The Times was founded by John Walter in 1785 as The Daily Universal Register.
Unhappy with Universal being universally omitted by the public, Walter changed the title after 940 editions on 1 January 1788 to The Times.
This was the highest Times sale under the current Editor, Robert Thomson, and ensured that the newspaper remained ahead of The Daily Telegraph in terms of full rate sales, although The Telegraph remains the market leader, with a circulation of around 920,000 copies, owing to over 300,000 discount subscribers each day.

Universal, for one, is sticking to its guns - it wants Napster shut down.
Universal's hard-line stance mirrors its unwillingness to compromise this summer with MP3.com, which has also been on the receiving end of music industry legal action.
And don't forget, Universal is testing its own Napster-style service, so may well see the original music sharing system, particularly if it's allied with a rival music company, as a major competitor to its own service.
