That cozy rumination on predictability and enlivened palates was set in its own prison of sorts, the remote, primitive village where an urbane outsider is forced to examine her motives over a period of decades.
These seemingly arbitrary images, coupled with the actor’s age (Tsutomu Yamazaki is roughly forty years older than the others in the cast), attend to a condemnation of the thrill of war and violence as holdovers from earlier generations which continually cripple society’s future.
Combined with the daily job of tidying up their cell and menial tasks in the prison workshop, the only excitement left is food.

'Returner' flashy, but lacking in substance | www.azstarnet.com ®
Yamazaki, whose visual gifts might eclipse 90 percent of the rest of the world's directors, doesn't seem to be able to give characters depth or make his story resonate much more than a Saturday morning cartoon.
The ending is ludicrous, and nearly an outright ripoff of "Back to the Future." But despite the shortcomings, "Returner" is worth catching for fans of the genre, just to get a glimpse of early Yamazaki work, and to whet the imagination of what this talented director could do with a coherent screenplay.

Planet Ark : Brief Exposure to Dirty Air May Raise Stroke Risk
Dr. Shin Yamazaki, an epidemiologist at Kyoto University, and associates collected data from the 13 largest cities in Japan regarding concentrations of suspended particulate matter 7 m diameters or higher (PM7), ambient temperature, plus other components of air pollution, from January 1990 to December 1994.
During that period, 17,354 residents age 65 or older died due to hemorrhagic or bleeding stroke, and 46,370 died from ischemic stroke, the type caused by blood clots.
Yamazaki's team suggests this discrepancy may be due to the longer interval from ischemic stroke onset to death, or to the fact that inhaled particles raise blood pressure, a risk factor for bleeding in the brain.
