Topic: Daily office

  CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Divine Office
This expression signifies etymologically a duty accomplished for God; in virtue of a Divine precept it means, in ecclesiastical language, certain prayers to be recited at fixed hours of the day or night by priests, religious, or clerics, and, in general, by all those obliged by their vocation to fulfil this duty.
The usage in France of the expression "saint-office" as synonymous with "office divin" is not correct.
At all events, during the course of the fifth century, the Office was composed, as to-day, of a nocturnal Office, viz.

The establishment of a regular schedule of publicly offered daily offices is an essential element to the fullness of parochial life for the laity as well as the clergy.
The purpose of the Daily Office is two-fold: First, it serves to sanctify time, or perhaps more accurately, to remind us in the time it takes for our offering of the office that all time is sacred, since all time belongs to God.
The consequence of the faithful rendering of this service is the fulfillment of the second purpose of the Daily Office, which is the sanctification, both of those who pray it, and of the Church for which they pray.

"The Daily Office is a sustained act of union with Christ by which we participate in his unceasing offering of love to the Father.
In reciting the psalms, singing canticles and hymns, proclaiming the divine word in Scripture, or lifting our voices in prayer, we are to enter more and more into the mind, heart, and will of Christ, and to be borne up by the Spirit in him to the Father.
Our praying of the psalter, which is the heart of the Daily Office, takes us ever deeper into the mystery of the incarnation; the psalms give voice to the whole range of human experience which Christ has embraced and redeemed as the Savior of the world.
