  [KFCC] Daimajin Review
"Daimajin" enjoys taking its time without making its storyline convoluted, and there is a nice amount of wide-open shots that allow you to absorb the superb surroundings.
The priestess manages to be an extraordinarily kind lady, what with her taking in the children, though at the same time she is cryptic as can be when confronted with the evil lord Samanosuke, as she can awaken the spirit of the God Majin herself.
After the smoke settles, "Daimajin" is a Japanese period piece that someone dropped in a vat of Rubbersuits to spectacular effect.

As I cannot claim to be a hardcore "Daimajin" fan, having only seen the first one, I'll leave out any of my interpretations of themythos and just focus on the film.
"Daimajin" tells the story of a wrathful stone god who leaves his mountaintop perch (at the end of the film) to punish the evil feudal masters of a Japanese village.
Because the monster scenes at the end are well-photographed and Daimajin releases an impressive, entertaining torrent of destruction and vengeance upon the town.

However, for the most part, Daimajin is a charming and entertaining fantasy film for the first 70 minutes, and a whup-ass, pissed off, monster movie for the last 20.
Luckily because the kids were smart enough to make sure that that was taken care of, they and their fathers are spared while the work camp is destroyed in another breathtaking 20 minutes of total destruction, rubber suit style.
The highlights, of course, are the scenes involving the Daimajin himself, with his furious and angry eyes, giant stone sword, and constantly stomping feet.

Daimajin (1966)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
After the opening scene, showing just how powerful Daimajin actually is (let's just say, he's more a force of nature than a giant monster), I was completely hooked.
The entire series is fairly grim, and I loved the fact that Daimajin isn't necessarily a good or bad guy.
He does what he does because he wants to, for whatever reason, be it that the villain offended him, or he felt sorry for one of the people who suffered over the course of the movie.

Daimajin (1966) - The Bad Movie Report
Daimajin is full of pretty pictures, and only the jarring inclusion of a couple of hand-held camera shots spoil the proceedings.
The last time I saw Return of Daimajin was over ten years ago, and I have never seen Wrath of Daimajin.
These are those rarities: kaiju movies that have not been overexposed by fans, imitators or parodies, that truly stand on their own as a unique brand of film.

Daimajin - Vol. 1 Movie: Daimajin - Vol. 1 DVD is available from Bestprices.com
A classic Japanese horror film about a village that lies near an ancient and restless spirit known as "Majin of the Mountain", DAIMAJIN is interesting variation on the giant monster concept that was literally taking over Japan in the 1960s.
When a nefarious scofflaw murders the village leader in order to take his place, he becomes the object of Daimajin's wrath when the spirit is called upon by the slain leader's son.
Majin, however, takes the form of a giant stone monster and doesn't seem to be too concerned with the plights of the humans that have called him out of his mountain, and soon begins demolishing the entire village.

Here Daimajin's revival is heralded by the death of a bird, which seems to be an extension of his spirit, and the willing self sacrifice of one of the children.
From this point, the film is wonderful, as Daimajin embarks on his snow swept rampage, with little regard for anything in his path.
_Return of Daimajin_ is technically superb: the sets are meticulously crafted; the special effects require little suspension of disbelief to convince; the cinematography is breathtakingly lovely; Akira Ifukube's score--his best of the series--is alternately haunting and rousing.

dOc DVD Review: Daimajin: Complete (1966)
Where many of the Kaiju films are renowned for their cheesiness, the Daimajin trilogy has its own distinct style, and is more graphically violent, with its central character trampling people to death, flinging them onto rocks, or impaling them.
With the two men set to be crucified, Kozasa prays to Majin, offering herself in sacrifice if the god will spare her brother, but it is when Samonoske sends his men to destroy the stone icon that Majin comes to life to teach the mortals a thing or two about messing with the gods.
Daimajin serves as a good introduction to the style of the trilogy, with a protracted build up before the god comes to life for the final act.

The Return of Daimajin (VHS) And Spelling
Once again, the legendary god of vengeance, Daimajin, has been called to life by villagers being oppressed by an evil overlord.
Typically, Daimajin does not limit his wrath to the wicked, forcing an army of samurai warriors to go up against the colossus.
Widely considered the best of the trilogy, it`s plot isn`t not much different than DAIMAJIN, but it is still an impressive film and a something of a technical wonder; the towering and thundering Daimajin is really more of a spectacle than Hollywood`s 1998 GODZILLA.

Daimajin opens in a small Japanese village in feudal Japan being overthrown by an evil overlord named Samanosuke (Yutaro Gomi).
Daimajin is a serious film with very little humor, but it is still very enjoyable.

When DaiMajin’s followers are oppressed by brutal tyrants, the statue comes to life and wreaks vengeance on all those who defy him.
To break the people’s faith in their god, he sends his men to blow up the statue of DaiMajin, which is on an island in the lake.
When he comes to life, the statue’s blank face is replaced by a more organic one, through which the actor uses only his eyes to chillingly project the god’s wrath.

DVD Verdict Review - Daimajin / Return Of Daimajin / Wrath Of Daimajin
The three Daimajin movies, products of the fertile imagination of screenwriter Tetsuo Yoshida, were shot back to back in 1966, each by a different director.
Oddly, Daimajin would have been interesting as a traditional samurai drama, even with the supernatural elements remaining metaphoric (as opposed to coming to bone-crushing life).
At $25 for the set (you have to pay $20 apiece individually), the Daimajin movies represent everything that is fine and good about kaiju movies: a childlike exuberance that takes comfort in an afternoon of imaginary adventure, horror, and property damage.

Stomp Tokyo Video Reviews - Wrath of Daimajin aka Return of the Giant Majin (1968)
Wrath of Daimajin is the second of three movies that feature the Giant Majin, a huge stone idol that comes to life and delivers primitive justice to those who would opress the innocent.
Apparently the movie was a success, because Daiei made sure Wrath of Daimajin came out the same year as Daimajin.
Wrath of Daimajin is probably one of the harder Japanese monster films to find, and most viewers of Godzilla films will probably find them of limited interest simply because there is so little monster footage.
