Karl Benz - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Benz and Daimler firms merged to form Daimler-Benz in 1926 -- the company's cars since then are called Mercedes-Benz (named after his daughter: Mercedes).
Benz designed not only his engine, which was a single-cylinder, water-cooled, 958 cm³, 0.75 hp (560 W) unit, but the whole three wheeled vehicle, which was first driven through Mannheim in 1885 by his wife Bertha Benz.
He is generally regarded as one of the inventors (with contemporary Gottlieb Daimler) of the petrol-powered automobile.

Daimler was so successful in improving the engine that in 1885 it was installed for the first time in a"riding car" (the first motorcycle), one year later in a boat and finally, in 1886, in a carriage.
Karl Benz was born on 25th November 1844 in Karlsruhe, the son of an engine driver. The middle of the last century, when Benz was an apprentice, was a time of widespread fascination with the"new technology".
Henceforth, Daimler devoted his attention to the four-stroke engine, which had to be made still smaller, lighter and more efficient to increase its field of application and its suitability for mobile use.

Despite the fact that Daimler and Benz (and later on Daimler-Benz) made a variety of products, the cars were always the great standard bearers as far as the public was concerned.
From the initial discussions in January, to the close of the merger in November, 1998 marked the year Daimler-Benz and Chrysler agreed to combine their businesses in a "merger of equals".
Daimler and Maybach had also developed and patented the first vee-twin engine, a 4-speed gearbox with gated linkage, a jet-type carburetor (still the basis for modern carburetors), and the first motorcar with a front-mounted engine - a significant step beyond the limited styling of the "horseless carriage".

In 1923 Benz conceived the famous Tropfenwagen which was the first mid-engined racing car the world had ever seen but by then Benz would soon become part of Daimler-Benz and the car would not be further developed.
Jellinek also contributed the Mercedes name to the Daimler cars figuring this non-German sounding name would be more popular with the French buying public.
It was Daimler engines that propelled Panhard and Levassor cars to victory in the first city-to-city events but it was an ex-Austro-Hungarian diplomat by the name of Emil Jellinek that convinced them of the benefits of racing their own cars to publicize their engineering qualities.

 MERCEDES
Daimler copyrighted the star in 1911 and even a four-pointed version (Lincoln, look out!); later, the surrounding ring was added and a circular band with the name Mercedes at the bottom and four tiny dreifach sternen at the top was adopted for the badge in 1916.
When Daimler and Benz joined to ward off financial ruin in bad times (1924), the Benz laurel wreath and the Mercedes star were superimposed with both names to form the badge still in use today.

DaimlerChrysler merger by Daimler-Benz and Chrysler
The Daimler chairman won wide praise for cutting away layers of middle management, but the restructuring also led to internal wrangles over the future of Mercedes-Benz, resulting in the eventual resignation of highly respected Mercedes boss Helmut Werner.
Both Daimler's Juergen Schrempp and Chrysler's Robert Eaton have a strong track record at the helms of their respective firms, and initial fears of a battle of egos were assuaged when it was announced Thursday that Eaton would retire from the DaimlerChrysler board after three years.
Schrempp, recently accused by his predecessor Edzard Reuter of "ruthless brutality", took over Daimler in 1995 and in his drive to rid the group of unprofitable business he has often clashed with his own top management.

Daimler- Benz AG Dr. Gerhard Liener, Daimler-Benz’s managing director for acquisitions and foreign operations, was analysing the international strategy of the firm’s truck group, headquartered in Stuttgart, West Germany.
Karl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler, both pioneers in the automotive industry, set up their respective companies in 1883 and 1890.
It was on January 29, 1986, and he wondered how long his company would be able to maintain its strength in the face of increased global competition posed by European and American truck companies, international joint ventures, and the lurking threat of Japanese export of large commercial vehicles.

 Mercedes-Benz History
Mercedes-Benz: The Early Years of Daimler and Benz through World War I. Gottlieb Daimler and Carl Benz were born only 60 miles apart in southern Germany.
In 1924, from sheer economic necessity, Benz and DMG signed an "Agreement of Mutual Interest." Although both companies retained their identities, the agreement was valid until the year 2000.
Ironically, history says Daimler, generally considered to be the father of modern automobiles never liked to drive, if, indeed he ever learned to drive.

Chrysler, Daimler Benz in merger talks - May 6, 1998
While many details still need to be ironed out, a deal between Daimler -- maker of the luxury Mercedes line of cars -- and Chrysler, which is almost as famous for its brushes with bankruptcy as it is minivans, would be the largest cross-border merger in history.
A deal could involve a merger between the two or a buyout of Chrysler by Daimler, which is larger in terms of revenue.
Most of Chrysler's assembly plants are located in the United States and Daimler's sole U.S. factory is in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
