Daimler-Benz DB 603 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Daimler-Benz DB 603 engine was a German aircraft engine used during World War 2.
The DB 603 engine was removed from the vehicle for use in fighter aircraft.
The DB 603 powered several aircraft, including the Do 217 NandM, Do 335, He 219, Me 410 and Ta 152C.

Daimler-Benz DB 605 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Developed from the Daimler-Benz DB 601 first produced in 1938, the DB 605 was used mainly in Messerschmitt Bf 109 and Bf 110 fighters.
The Daimler-Benz DB 605 was a German aircraft engine, built during World War II.
The DB 605 used fuel injection instead of a carburetor, a great asset in combat because the engine did not cut out under negative g-forces.

 Heinkel He 219 Uhu
The 'American' idea of nosewheel gear was scorned, and Heinkel even had the temerity to pick the Daimler-Benz DB 603 engine, a big and powerful unit that, like the Heinkel project, had never been requested officially, and thus was itself under a cloud.
Most aircraft had the Daimler-Benz DB 603A engine, although original plans called for the Junkers Jumo 222 engine.
The DB 603G was finally incorporated in the He 219A-7, which proved the most widely produced variant, while the stripped-down anti-Mosquito He 219A-6 used the 2,100 hp (1565 kW) DB 6703L which was essentially a DB 603E with both MW-50 and GM-1 and a two-stage supercharger.

 Focke-Wulf Ta 152
The Fw 190C was basically similar to the B but was to be powered by the Daimler Benz DB 603 liquid-cooled engine using either a mechanically-driven supercharger operating in conjunction with nitrous oxide injection or a turbosupercharger.
It was from the start to use a turbosupercharged Daimler-Benz DB 603 engine, the engine which Kurt Tank had preferred all along.
The Ta 152C with the lighter DB 603 engine was otherwise identical to the Ta 152B.

The DB 601 was expected to be the proper powerplant for the Bf 109.
The DB 600a, which was rated at 900 HP take-off power, was followed by the improved DB 601, with 1,175 HP take-off power.
Ernst Udet had flown a DB 600a-powered prototype at a flying meet in July, 1937, in an attempt to make a new speed record, but ended up crash-landing the aircraft.

In case of the DB 603G, the heat carried away by the oil might be redistributed still in the engine and eventually dissipated by water.
I'm sorry but there are no further data about neither the DB 603 nor the Jumo 213 cooling system available to me and the only place where it might be is temporarily closed...
DB series had laso a shortcoming that limited their power potential: cylinder liners were of dry type.

Tank favored the Daimler-Benz DB 603, which was looked on with disfavor by the Reichluftfartsministerium (RLM), who informed Tank he should use either the BMW 801 or the Jumo 213, which had just entered series production.
The DB 603 was rated at 1,900 h.p.
Built from a Fw-190A series airframes, the fuselage was lengthened 2 feet, 2.5 inches, to accommodate the DB 603 engine, which was some 300 lbs.

 BMW 801
This problem was soon solved but later Fw 190s, the 1943 'D' and after, tended to use the Junkers Jumo 213, or in the 'Ta' designs of Kurt Tank liquid-cooled Daimler-Benz DB 603 variants.
An additional feature on the BMW engine in the Fw 190 was the Kommandogeraet, a hydraulic-electric unit that automatically adjusted engine fuel flow, mixture and timing with propellor pitch in response to throttle demand and also engaged the supercharger.
Initially the engines had a tendency to overheat and also produced unpleasantly high temperatures in the cockpit.

 Focke-Wulf Ta 152 -
Kurt Tank wanted to use the Daimler-Benz DB 603 engine in the Ta 152, as it offered better high altitude performance and also a greater potential for developments.
The engine also included a GM 1 Nitrous oxide injection system and the aircraft had an increased wingspan compared to the previous FW 190 design, as a further accommodation towards better high-altitude performance.
But this engine had been used in the FW 190B/C with many problems, so the engine was considered to be too difficult to implement in the Ta 152 design by the Reichsluftfahrtministerium(German Air Ministry) officials.

Other engines were tried: the 109's 1,750hp Daimler-Benz DB 603, used in the experimental Fw 190C, and the 1,776hp Junkers Jumo 213A, used in the production Fw Later Fw 190D variants were so extensively altered from the short-nose, radial-engine Fw 190A series that they were redesignated Ta-152 (for designer Kurt Tank).
Improved versions of the Fw 190 were tested with such features as cabin pressurization and a water/methanol injection that increased the normal 1,600hp of the engine to 2,100hp for brief periods.
Altogether, some 20,000 Fw 190s were built in six Focke-Wulf plants, two Arado plants, one Ago and one Fieseler plant.

The Focke Wulf company's initial responses (based on the DB 601 engine) drew little interest, but their designer Kurt Tank proposed to use the eighteen-cylinder, air-cooled, radial BMW 139 in a fighter.
