  Paddy Doyle: Newspaper Articles
Daingean, when it was first built, was a British Army garrison, the main, two-storey building a plain but well-designed series of quite modest rooms surrounding the entrance courtyard on three sides.
From the point of view of Daingean, once on the fringe of the Pale, the period during which the barracks grew and came to dominate the town was an era of prosperity derived from the military presence quite at odds with the poverty in other parts of Ireland.
Daingean, in their view, should be a memorial to the inmates of all the industrial schools, other reformatories and to the many people who went through them.

Daingean is the subject of hundreds of complaints of physical and sexual abuse perpetrated by members of the Oblates on boys incarcerated there.
In this area Daingean is relatively unique in that a wealth of contemporary documents exist which give a remarkable insight into the Oblates' attitude to the beating of children.
Knowledge at senior government level of the abuses at Daingean were a critical factor in the establishment of the Kennedy committee in 1968 to investigate the industrial and reformatory school system in the country.

Daingean has long boasted a strong status as a Midlands town and this was never more evident than at the start of the 20th Century when Daingean displayed at various points a number of important public buildings including the courthouse, the government reformatory, a military barracks, a Protestant Church and a Catholic Church.
