It is quite similar to an Unkei piece owned by Kotokuji temple in Ashikaga, which is believed to have been made at the request of Ashikaga Yoshikane, a close aide to the shogun in the early years of the Kamakura period, Yamamoto said.
There is also a document stating that a Dainichi Nyorai figure was enshrined at a Buddhist temple in the area in 1193 in honor of Yoshikane's deceased daughters.
