  Manchurian Legacy: Dairen
Dairen was an important port as early as the 6th century AD.
Dairen was transformed during the same period from a minor fishing port into a modern commercial port and was given the Russian name Dalny (Distant), from the Dalianwan Gulf (Talienwan in historical literature).
Dairen, given the Japanese name Dairen (as the Kanji characters are pronounced), was enlarged and modernized.

 Manchurian Legacy: Synopsis
Kazuko Kuramoto was born and raised in Dairen, Manchuria, in 1927, at the peak of Japanese expansionism in Asia.
Dairen (Port Arthur) was an important colonial outpost on the Liaotung Peninsula because the train lines, established by Russia and taken over by the Japanese, ended there.
When Kuramoto's grandfather arrived in Dairen as a member of the Japanese police force shortly after the end of the Russo-Japanese War in 1905, the family's belief in Japanese supremacy and its "divine" mission to "save" Asia from Western imperialists was firmly in place.

FDR suggested that the port of Dairen, on the southern coast of Manchuria, could be made into a free port.
In China, he wanted Soviet leases of both Dairen and Port Arthur as well as control of the Manchurian railroads running from the Soviet border to these ports in southern Manchuria.
Stalin said that it was "clear that if these conditions were not met it would be difficult for him and Molotov to explain to the Soviet people why Russia was entering the war against Japan." Furthermore, Stalin wanted "these conditions set forth in writing agreed to by the three powers" before leaving Yalta.
