It is the capital of Dakhlet Nouadhibou region with 87,000 inhabitants (2005 estimate) and an area of 22,300 km².
The economic base for Nouadhibou is fishing and fish-processing, and exportation of iron that is transported with the railways from central Mauritania.
Nouadhibou was during the French colonial period known as Port Etienne.
