My exposure to cold region engineering and science in DRDO, with the background of being part of the Indian Army (Corps of Engineers) helped me in becoming the leader of the first Indian wintering party to Antarctica in 1983, with a unique mission of establi- shing the first-ever Indian over-wintering station, Dakshin Gangotri.
Many of the decisions which I took while constructing Dakshin Gangotri, starting from digging the foundation for  station in snow for commissioning of various engineering systems and then running the station with my eleven  colleagues, contributed to the success of the mission.
I recall one of my significant contributions that has been the development of standard operating procedures (SOP) for day-to-day conduct in and around the station and how they helped me survive one blizzard.
