Dakshineswar, a small place situated alongside the Vivekananda Setu, in the Hooghly district, north of Calcutta, on the East bank of Hoogli River, is famous for its temples.
In 1847, Rani Rashmoni of Bengal began the construction of the famous Dakshineswar Kali Temple.
On the West bank of Hoogli River (almost across Dakshineswar), is Belur Math, the headquarters of the Ramakrishna Mission, an association founded by Swami Vivekananda in 1897.

Westerners are rare beings at Dakshineswar and therefore the object of some curiosity: nor are there facilities of the type that Westerners tend to expect and it is important to be self-sufficient (although the cafes do sell acceptable tea and coffee).
Dakshineswar itself can be extremely crowded, especially on weekends and holidays, and early morning visits are recommended if you wish to avoid this.
Travel to Dakshineswar is easy by taxi or by Metro to Dum Dum then cycle-rickshaw (neither avoids the noise and pollution but the latter does minimise it).
