Alford alleges that his prominent role on the School Board during 1957-58, bolstered by a television appearance in September 1958 in which he outlines his views that integration is a communist plot, inspires hundreds of Arkansawyers to urge him to make the race.
Alford boasts of other Board members saying "they are afraid to discuss their problems freely in his presence." Alford also rehashes an issue Gutheridge uses in the primary, reprinting numerous times a twenty year old article concerning Hays's role as vice-chairman of the Southern Conference on Human Welfare and its condemnation of Jim Crow laws.
It is true that Alford may be a more viable candidate than Gutheridge, what with his stature in the community as a respectable physician and family man. But Gutheridge and Alford use the same rhetoric of defiance and states's rights in their campaigns.

village voice > books > Mike Albo Hornito: My Lie Life by Henry Alford
Written in the form of a memoir, Hornito juxtaposes a character named Mike Albo's present-day life as a gay New Yorker who is in a perpetual rut with that same character's account of growing up in '70s and '80s suburbia amid various sources of homophobia and pop-culture overload.
The author's mixing of metafictional technique with references to Solid Gold dancers and T.J. Maxx outlets makes for an unusual brew; Albo is like a Hawaiian-shirt-wearing Dale Peck.
The difficulty of owning up to his homosexuality is the chaotic element in the young Albo's life that prompted his construction of a narrative.
