Wooden horses have been for sale in fairs for at least 400 years, but the today decoration is from from 19th century, with its roots in 'kurbits' painting from 18th century.
Dalecarlian pedlars bought dozens of wooden horses to be used as payment during their sales trips for food and accomodation.
He used the pattern to draw the outline of the horses on a suitable piece of timber and then sawed them from a block ready to be carved.This gave each horse a basic size and shape which the carver then completed by hand.
