  Daleks
The Daleks are the mutated remains of a race known as the Kaleds.
The first Daleks to emerge from the bunker in which the first Daleks were entombed created a city on the surface of Skaro, and ran on static electricity which was fed through the floor of the city, and were incapacitated if they were removed from the floor.
Davros and his creations, the Daleks, were directly responsible for the destruction of the majority of both the Daleks and the Thals, despite the fact that the Time Lords had sent the Fourth Doctor to interfere in the creation of the Daleks.

 Dalek Hierarchy
The first one made its appearance at the beginning of the third episode of "Dalek Invasion of Earth," being referred to as the "Supreme Commander." It is identical to the standard Dalek except that its casing is entirely fl.
It is suggested that the Dalek Prime is directly under the Emperor in power, and that it is the Dalek Prime which leads the Supreme Council, later becoming the new Emperor, which is featured in the Big Finish audio Dalek stories.
There appears to be no rank distinction within the Imperial Dalek ranks, with the exception of Davros himself, now called the Emperor and residing in a casing very much like the TV 21 Dalek Emperor casings sans gun stick, manipulator arm, and painted entirely white.

The Daleks (pronounced "DAH-lecks") are a extraterrestrial race of mutated Kaleds from the planet Skaro.
As noted above the Daleks that were resurrected through the manipulation and mutation of human genetic material by the Dalek Emperor were religious fanatics that worshiped the Emperor as their god.
This contrasts with some of his earlier dealings with the Daleks; for example the Second Doctor attempted to instil a "human factor" in Daleks (The Evil of the Daleks) and the Fourth Doctor hesitated when presented with the opportunity to destroy the Daleks at the point of their creation (Genesis of the Daleks).

Externally, Daleks resemble man-sized salt or pepper shakers, with a single mechanical eyestalk in a rotating dome, a gunstalk containing a projected energy weapon (or "death ray"), and a telescoping robot arm.
In Dalek (2005), the manipulator arm, in addition to its technology interfacing abilities, was able to kill a man by crushing his skull, and in Doomsday (2006) extract the brainwaves from a man's head, killing him in the process.
Despite this, the Daleks' supposed inability to climb stairs is still frequently referred to for humorous effect by journalists covering the series and in Dalek itself prior to the Dalek levitating, to the shock of those mocking it.
