Dalhousie University, Halifax, was founded in 1818 by Lieutenant-Governor George Ramsay, 9th earl of DALHOUSIE.
Dalhousie envisaged a liberal, nondenominational college based on the educational standards of Edinburgh University and offering a progressive alternative to the Anglican UNIVERSITY OF KING'S COLLEGE at Windsor, Nova Scotia.

The first volume of Peter Waite's projected two-volume history of Dalhousie University fills a noteworthy gap in the historical study of higher education in Canada, and does so with a style and flair that is characteristic of its author.
It lacks certain key elements of what have come to be known as the distinguishing marks of the newer university histories: an emphasis on the social role of higher education, as seen in the origins and later careers of students, and a substantial body of quantitative evidence.
The dimensions of the political struggles that pitted supporters of Dalhousie against those of its Church of England rival, King's College, or that accompanied the fleeting attempt in the 1870s to create a federated University of Halifax, are convincingly delineated.
