Salvador Dali: painting the apocalypse of Perillos?
Dali was one of the figureheads of the Surrealist movement.
For Dali, the station of Perpignan was the centre of his universe; uncomfortable with the administrative details the Spanish station of Figueres required, he opted to ship all his large canvases to the United States from the station of Perpignan.
Dali’s perception as a madman was augmented in 1984, when he apparently tried to commit suicide by setting his bed on fire.

Fortunately, because you won't learn much about early Dali from this exhibition, you can supplement it with a trip downriver, where some of his greatest paintings are on show at Tate Modern; this Thameside Dalinian odyssey recalls his visit to Britain in 1936 when he gave a lecture in a deep-sea diving suit.
Looking from early to late Dali, the falling off is undeniable, but something links his most compelling paintings with the bronze unicorns, tarot cards and rococo tableware that constitute The Dali Universe: his poisonous mixture of traditional technique with a rejection of the values that technique was meant to uphold.
The Dali Universe may not have much in the way of classic early works, but it does have one rare souvenir - the painted backcloth of wide-open eyes with spiny eyelashes that Dali designed for Hitchcock's 1945 movie Spellbound.

Gala was Dali's feminine ideal as well as life and soul mate, and after her death (and the end of their 52 years of companionship and love) his health steadily declined and he closed himself off in his castle in Pubol, dying in 1989.
Dali also met 'the father of Surrealism', Sigmund Freud who apparently was extremely impressed with his conceptual first son.
Worth mentioning too, is that Dali had a continual fetish with a detail from the social realist Milletís 'The Angelus' ñ a motif which reoccurs, amongst others (limp watches, crutches, Gala (of course), ants, flames, his moustache et al.), throughout his career.

Andrea Padroni, managing director of the Dali Universe gallery in central London, said it was partially because he was active in so many areas - not restricting himself to one type of art - indeed, not even restricting himself to the art world at all.
Alongside his compatriot Pablo Picasso, Dali is among the most famous artists in history, with so much of his work represented in modern culture.
However, Dali is not so revered in his home country, Spain, where some see him as a traitor.
