The hospital, built in 1894, was closed in 2000 and replaced by a facility in Benbecula.

We now know that there were at least 25 settlements from this mysterious period on South Uist's machair, with most of them grouped into three main complexes at Daliburgh in the south, Iochdar in the north (on the rocket range) and Kildonan and Bornish in the centre of the island.
The one north of the track (which runs from the radiomast to the sea) was largely destroyed by quarrying in the 1980s and early 1990s but the one to the south was rescued in time and has yielded some extraordinary discoveries.
Daliburgh's machair contains a complete cross-section of settlement history from 2000 BC to AD 1300.

Mr Mackinnon's position as Daliburgh township clerk, the source said, coupled with the need for local land to complete two of the six projects placed the councillor in a position where he was able to veto an extension to Mr MacLeod's contract as iomairt development officer.
These projects include a football pitch at Daliburgh School, a croileagan play area, also at Daliburgh, and a picnic and interpretation area at the Hallan archaeological site.
According to Daliburgh and Eriskay councillor Angus MacDonald — who is also chairman of the Southend Development Group — the six projects have "fallen back" with little sign of interest in the post of consultant project co-ordinator required to oversee their completion.
