Explorers, botanists, artists, writers, and adventurers all came to the "grand dalles of the Columbia." The first homes were built in 1838 by Jason Lee's Methodist missionaries established the Wascopum Mission here, the name being used by the Wasco Indians here.
The Grand Dalles referred to the great rapids east of the present town, inundated by the backwaters of The Dalles dam in 1957.
In 1966, the name City of The Dalles was officially adopted by city ordinance to conform with popular usage.

The more cautious of the travelers carefully worked their wagons down the banks of the Columbia, but then came The Dalles, a place in the river where two great rocks restricted and channelled the flow of the entire river between them.

 A History of Wasco County-The Dalles
The name The Dalles is derived from the French word dalle, meaning flagstone, and was applied to the narrows of the Columbia River, above the present city of The Dalles, by French-Canadian employees of the fur companies.
Among other things, dalle meant a stone used to flag gutters, and the peculiar basalt formations along the narrows doubtless suggested gutters.
Although the city is officially Dalles City, the post office, and common usage is The Dalles.

This photograph, taken by The Dalles resident Gladys Seufert in 1959, shows the remains of the Indian Shaker church at Lone Pine just east of The Dalles.
This structure was built by Henry Gulick, a Scottish immigrant who settled in the area in the 1890s.
