Dallas was a long-running primetime television soap opera about the Ewings, a wealthy Texas oil family.
It was broadcast around the world, and is probably the most famous and successful American soap opera outside of the U.S. The series is probably best-known for the central character of J.R. Ewing, the vain, greedy, scheming, crass oil baron played by Fort Worth native Larry Hagman for the show's entire run.
The communist government of Nicolae Ceauşescu's Romania ran episodes of Dallas in the 1980s hoping that it would convince people that capitalism was corrupt and decadent.

When Dallas County was formed in 1846, Dallas was designated as the temporary county seat; in 1850 voters selected it as the permanent county seat over Hord's Ridge (Oak Cliff) and Cedar Springs, both of which eventually came within its corporate limits.
Dallas businessmen turned their attention to securing rail service and succeeded in attracting the Houston and Texas Central in 1872 and the Texas and Pacific in 1873, making Dallas one of the first rail crossroads in Texas.
The population grew from 679,684 in 1960 to 844,401 in 1970, and from 904,078 in 1980 to 1,006,877 in 1990.

The Margot and Bill Winspear Opera House will be one of three theaters comprising the Dallas Center for the Performing Arts, which is scheduled to open in late 2007 or early 2008.
About the Dallas Center for the Performing Arts Foundation: Organized in September 2000, the foundation's mission is to complete planning and raise funds to design and construct the Dallas Center for the Performing Arts.

The opera has been staged by Francesca Zambello, whose previous Dallas Opera credits include "Madama Butterfly" and "Billy Budd." Sets and costumes were designed by Marie-Jeanne Lecca.
The last decade has seen a veritable explosion of new American operas, from William Bolcom’s "McTeague" to John Corigliano’s "Ghosts of Versailles" to John Harbison’s "The Great Gatsby." But "Therese Raquin" is only the second world premiere in the 45-year history of the Dallas Opera.

Lawrence Vincent Kelly, founder and general manager of the Dallas Civic Opera, was born in Chicago, Illinois, on May 30, 1928, the son of Patrick James and Thelma (Seabott) Kelly.
In 1953 Kelly was a cofounder of the Lyric Theatre of Chicago, an opera company of which he was secretary-treasurer from 1953 to 1956 and managing director from 1954 to 1956.
Kelly was brought to Dallas, and by March 1957 the Dallas Civic Opera was chartered.
