Ivan Duknović, called Giovanni Dalmata (also known as Giovanni di Trau and Ioannes Stephani Duknovich de Tragurio) was a Croatian sculptor who was mainly active in Rome, in Hungary and Dalmatia.
Giovanni Dalmata was, with Mino da Fiesole and Andrea Bregno, the leading sculptor in Rome in the second half of the 15th century.
He was born in Trogir around 1440 and came to Rome between 1460 and 1465 to work for Pope Paul II on the Palazzo Venezia.

According to the evidence of the bishop's coat of arms, the person commissioning the altar was most likely the Bishop of Csanád, Johannes de Zokol, who retired to the Pauline monastery of Diósgyõr in 1493 to live the rest of his life there as a monk.
Sometime around 1486 or 1487 the sculptor Giovanni Dalmata, a celebrated artist who had worked in Rome and in Trau (Trogir), arrived at Buda, where the construction of King Matthias's Renaissance place was under way at the time.
Dalmata's style can be recognized on a number of fragmented stoneworks of the Royal Place of Buda.

A transenna in marble by Mino da Fiesole, Andrea Bregno and Giovanni Dalmata divides the chapel into two parts; the wider one, together with the altar, is reserved for proper religious ceremonies and other clergy uses, and the smaller one for the faithful.
The passage (cancellata, gateway) was originally in gilt iron and more central; it was moved later toward the faithful area to grant a wider space for the pope.
