DALMUIR HOUSE is situated in the parish of Old Kilpatrick and county of Dumbarton; it stands on an eminence on the right bank of the river Clyde, and commands extensive views of this beautiful part of the country.
Gradually he acquired from different proprietors the lands of Auchintoshan, Mountblow, Dalmuir, Balquharan, Kilbowie, and others, and these composed his estate of Duntocher, having an area of more than 2,000 acres of fertile soil lying in compact form, and bounded on the south by the Clyde.
(1) The mansion House of Dalmuir is built not on Dalmuir proper, but on a portion of the lands of Balquharan.

The lands of Dalmuir were held by the Spreull family for nearly 500 years and then had several owners before the mill owner William Dunn acquired them in 1828.

From the late eighteenth century the areas of Dalmuir Glen and Dalmuir Shore were subject to industrial developments such as calico printworks, paper mills, and even soda manufacturing, but it was the opening of workshops by the Clyde Navigation Trust in 1859 and Beardmore's Dalmuir Naval Construction Works in 1906 which had the most impact.
However, employment was still readily available at the shipyards in nearby Clydebank and, together with a wide range of good-quality housing, excellent local schools and community facilities, Dalmuir residents enjoyed a reasonably comfortable standard of living.
This was a time when crowds and marching bands would turn out for the opening of Dalmuir Park, trams provided easy access into Clydebank and Glasgow, and local lads were assured of an apprenticeship at one of the yards.

Part of the site of the former William Beardmore and Company's Naval Construction Works at Dalmuir, Clydebank, Dunbartonshire, Scotland was bought by the Ministry of Supply, in January 1939, and it was converted into an Engineering ROF.
ROF Dalmuir started production as a Royal Ordnance Factory under the control of the Ministry of Supply, it opened on 16th January 1941.
In 1951 ROF Dalmuir was converted to manufacture armoured fighting vehicles and this continued until 1957 when the site was leased to Babcock and Wilcox of Renfrew on a 15 year lease.

In 1921, in recognition of his major contribution to the war effort, Beardmore was raised to the peerage, becoming Lord Invernairn.
More realistically, part of the Dalmuir works were turned over to locomotive construction and repair while the shipyard and marine engine works were readied for what was thought to be a lengthy boom in rebuilding the war depleted merchant fleets of the world.
As the depressed years of the 1920s bit deeply into the British manufacturing base, Beardmore was unable to take the drastic steps needed to save his company, which, by the late 1920s, was in a state of financial collapse.

Apart from submarines, liners and warships the company were also responsible for manufacturing heavy armaments, such as tanks and field guns, steam locomotives, aircraft and airships, the largest of which, the R36 was almost 700 feet long and could carry more than 50 people.
The legacy of the Dalmuir Yard of William Beardmore is still felt 70 years after the company closed the shipyard.
The Dalmuir Yard during the early 1920s was hit by a series of protracted strike action by workers, as were most of the yards up and down the River Clyde during that period.

Link Group’s planning application to demolish its 192 obsolete flats and build 114 new homes in Dalmuir has been approved.

A former paper-making settlement which now forms a district of Clydebank (West Dunbartonshire), Dalmuir lies on the north shore of the River Clyde, to the northwest of the town centre.
Originally located between the railway and Forth & Clyde Canal, Dalmuir expanded southwest to the river when Sir William Beardmore built his Naval Contruction Yards in the early years of the 20th Century.
Dalmuir House was built c.1810 by Richard Collins, who operated the paper mills, but was demolished in 1929.
