  History of Damariscotta, Maine
Damariscotta is situated near the centre of Lincoln County, on the eastern side of a river of the same name.
Nobleboro bounds it on the north, Bristol on the south, Bremen on the east, and Newcastle on the west.
A free bridge of 175 feet in length connects Damariscotta Village with Newcastle, near which is a station of the Knox and Lincoln Railroad, distant 18 miles from Bath.

Newcastle is a town in Lincoln County, incorporated as a District on June 19, 1753 from the former Sheepscot Plantation, and as a town on August 23, 1775.
Settled in the early 1630's, Newcastle was the first town to be incorporated within the colonial territory of Sagadahoc.
The village of Newcastle is located in the eastern part of the town, on the Damariscotta River.

The small odd-shaped bricks of which the building was constructed were made across the "Pond", as Damariscotta Lake was called, and hauled by oxen across the ice the Winter of 1807.
John was the oldest son of Walter Madigan, who came to Damariscotta in 1804 from the same part of Ireland as Kavanagh and Cottrill.

Damariscotta became a separate town in 1847, having previously been parts of Bristol, Maine and Nobleboro, Maine.
The town's major claim to fame are the 2,500-year-old oyster shell middens (heaps) along the banks of the Damariscotta River, which is a tidal estuary of the Gulf of Maine.
