Dambadeniya was the royal capital in mid in the 13th century.
Excavations have uncoverd remains of the temple of the tooth relic and the Royal palace, ponds and Garden layouts, moats and city walls etc. Historic in nature, majestic in repose is Dambadeniya, selected as the capital of the kingdom of Sri Lanka by king Vijayabahu the 3rd (1232-36).
Vijayabahu, the king of the Dambadeniya dynasty fought the invaders and established Dambadeniya.

The first place chosen to reestablish the Sinhalese kingdom was Dambadeniya, about 70 miles southwest of Polonnaruwa; Vijayabahu III (reigned 1232-36) and his three successors ruled from there.
Under Parakramabahu II (reigned 1236-70) the Dambadeniya kingdom achieved great power; it was able to expel the Kalingas from the island with Pandyan help and to repel an invasion from the Malay Peninsula.
The great monasteries of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa were disbanded, and new institutions arose in and around the capitals of Dambadeniya, Kurunegala, Gampola, Rayigama, and Kotte, but they were not of the size or stature of their predecessors in the Dry Zone.

The Dambadeniya period was inaugurated by Vijaya Bahu III a native of Galahitiyawa village presently belonging to Uda Dumbara electorate.
From Beligala temple of the tooth relic the relic was taken with all due honours enroute to Dambadeniya by this king and deposited in a vihara built for the tooth relic.
His son ruled for 12 years from 1272 to 1284 making Dambadeniya and Yapahuwa his capital as Buwaneka Bahu I. The ruler from 1287 to 1294 was Parakrama Bahu III who was the son of Parakrama Bahu II.

 HISTORY AND GEOGRAPHY
Dambadeniya was a seat of Government of the Sinhala Kings, for about 63 years commencing from 1220 AD.
The shifting of the capital was also a result of a further invasion led by Chandrabanu of Tambralingam, a pretty kingdom of the Malay Peninsula, which had established itself as an independent state in the last days of Sri Vijaya empire in the middle of the 13th century.
From Dambadeniya the capital again shifted to neighbouring Yapahuwa, which is a picturesque rock fortress, 300 feet high abounded with old rock shelters where the Buddhist anchorites were said to have been living.

Apart from the annual procession, the murals of the Tooth Relic Temple at Vijasundararama at Dambadeniya depicts a procession when the Tooth Relic was brought to Dambadeniya from Beligala accompanied by the king.
An important feature of the Dalada procession at Dambadeniya was the addition of the processions of the Devales or shrines of popular protective divinities to the procession of the Tooth Relic.
