DAMIEN DEMPSEY - Thurs 9th Inspired by the likes of Bob Marley and Luke Kelly, Damien Dempsey - Dublin's uber-urban poet - is about to release his debut long player - a collection of songs that will surely shift him into contention as one of Ireland's romantic, yet fiercely uncompromising singer songwriters.

Also, Damien Dempsey's voice is sweet and powerful live, but on the record it is not.

Damien Dempsey @ The 100 Club, London
Dublin boy and junior boxing champion Damien Dempsey brought his unique blend of Irish rock and sweaty soul to the 100 Club for a gig that left not a dry eye in the house: well for the lads present anyway.
Clearly his work hits the same emotional response buttons to Dempsey’s predominantly male fans as Morrissey, but without the lilting delivery or defiant bravura it was hard to feel their emotional charge.
But somehow the stories lost something in the telling, and Damien’s delivery failed to elevate this performance beyond a good singsong into the realms of a night to remember from a singer about to crash into the big time.

Damien is a uniquely Irish specimen that I haven’t seen evidence of in Toronto.
The aching acoustic chords forever echoing behind Dempsey’s voice and the skilfully chosen trad-celtic accompaniments, it’s all there to lull you into a false sense of security.
Of course, Dempsey balances it out with I’ve no bread and I feel fecking braindead / In a room full of e-heads on “Party On,” a poem to, apparently, not being able to see pretty flowers when you’ve got a head full of coke.

While Damien Dempsey's vocal is an acquired taste, there can be no doubting that on closer inspection you'll discover that his work shows an astute observation of Irish life.
While many of his contemporaries are focussing on love and heartbreak, Dempsey's concern is in giving a voice to the downtrodden, those who can't speak for themselves and he does it very effectively.
Many might question Dempsey's vocal talent; truthfully, this reviewer did too, at first, but there is a lot to be said for his simple, direct approach to singing.

Damien has one of the rawest voices I have heard and John Reynolds (producer) has held back beautifully from the temptation to perhaps over produce or polish him.
Damien sings with the same gusto..and same flaws (!) that any man in a Dublin pub would, and indeed the Irish diaspora will recognise the traditonal Irish, balladic style of singing from any family gathering.
But it is vocally where the album has all its strengths, not just because it is impossible to ignore by force alone or strong Dublin dialect but by the unique way he punctuates phrases and adds a street ruggedness to words.

'patience' exhonorates damiens idol Peter Tosh whilst the rest of his material is pebbledashed with splats of every other singer songwriter you ever loved.
From the more melancholy but optimistic 'Sing all our cares away' and 'Not on your own tonight' the album progresses onto songs that make you want to dance ('St. Paddy's Day' and 'Party On') and then songs that make you realise how the Irish were so dispossessed and messed around ('Colony', 'Patience', 'Chocktaw Nation'.
Damien's difference is his ability to tell the world straight about Ireland's past, present and future without making you feel like that if you're not Irish you can't be a part of his music.

Guardian Unlimited | Arts Friday Review | Damien Dempsey, Shots
A one-man voice for the struggles of the Irish working classes and the pain of noble but downtrodden Ireland in general, Damien Dempsey can count Sinead O'Connor among his fans - but also, less obviously, Brian Eno, who guests on his third album.
Never one to use a metaphor when the grindingly literal will do, Dempsey sings as if from a pulpit and crafts lyrics that manage to be bothcrass and clumsy.
There are, however, glimpses of grace - most potently in the album's closing minutes, as Oscar Wilde's assertion that "we are all in the gutter but some of us are looking at the stars" is sung repeatedly, like a mantra.
